ENG 2D: SUMMATIVE TASK

Lord of the Flies or Night

READ THIS DOCUMENT ENTIRELY AND THOROUGHLY

Purpose:
- to demonstrate your ability to communicate orally effectively
- to demonstrate your ability to create a media text
- to demonstrate your ability to develop and support a theme
- to demonstrate your ability to explain the codes and conventions of a media text

Task:
Using one of the texts we have studied this semester, you will create an audio or
audio/visual recording. Your recording will explore a topic developed in the novel.
Your recording will use the conventions of a contemporary media construction and use
primary (examples from the novel) and secondary (examples from other
sources) research to support your opinions/observations.

Essentially, you will choose a topic, complete relevant research (minimum 2

academic secondary sources), develop a THEME based on your topic (i.e.
Individual freedom is taken for granted in this day and age), and construct a
show based around that theme. Here are some sample styles you could emulate, as
well as some sample topics:

Media Topics
- A Crash Course-style - Social conflict
videoblog - Oppression
- A Mercer Report-style Rant - Gender roles
- A TedTalk - Accountability for children
- A news broadcast - Societal constructs
- A YouTube instructional - Faith
video - Identity
- A recorded - Human nature
university/college course - Family relationships
- A news magazine show
- An interview show
(Strombolopolous, Dr. Phil,
the View)
- A genre production (horror,
travel, home renovation,
reality, etc.)

You are expected to submit:

___ Your final audio/video recording

___ Your research notes
___ A written copy of the recording, including script, stage directions, and/ or
storyboards
(Use these to call attention to your codes & conventions)
___ A written analysis of the codes & conventions used and why they are
appropriate
(chart form is acceptable)
___ A list of works cited MLA style citations. (Ask me, or see Owl Purdue if you are
unsure.
