Reflections on Learning
Week of 1/9 - 1/13
This week was a benign start of easing into the new semester. We reviewed the new syllabus in class and what would be expected of us this semester. I started working on my reading goals essay, and I think that it will be a good way for me to have a plan and be able to get into the habit of reading as often as I can. I really enjoy the time that is set aside on Fridays this semester that is specifically for writing. I think that having that time will really benefit me to be able to have that extra little push to keep working on my assignments and not slack off and do all the work at the end.
Week of 1/16 - 1/20
This week we had a lot of group discussions which I feel were very helpful to the learning process for me. We also started working on a learning log about whether or not juveniles should be tried as adults for their crimes. On Friday I continued to work on my objective summary.
Week of 1/23 - 1/27
At the start of the week we worked on a few quick writes on the two articles read in class, and then worked on a google doc with our table groups to answer some questions about the text. We then talked about it as a class to hear what others had to say. I also finished and turned in my learning log #1 this week and started to prepare for our socratic seminar on Juvenile Justice.
Week of 1/30 - 2/3
On Monday and Tuesday of this week, our focus in class was to prepare for the upcoming socratic seminar on Juvenile Justice. On block day, Thursday, I was in group two of the socratic seminar and had the argument of whether or not Juveniles should be tried as adults and what if the commit especially bad crimes. I talked a few times but it made me a little uncomfortable to talk in front of the whole class and my sentences got a little jumbled up. Overall it was a really good class discussion and it was very interesting to hear what everybody had to say.
Week of 2/6 - 2/10
Today is Monday and I am extremely haggard from my dance convention over the weekend. It was so much fun!! I am thinking about all of the assignments I need to work on for this class because there are quite a few at the moment. Ms. Frederick is not here today so we are told to work on a draft of our Juvenile Justice paper. The rest of the week was mostly spent working on our juvenile justice assignments.
Week of 2/13 - 2/17
On Monday of this week I worked on my Juvenile Justice essay. On Tuesday was the genesis of a new unit on language, gender, and culture. Im excited to learn more about this topic because it is something that is changing a lot in the world currently. On Thursday we read the first article called, honor code. My prediction was wrong because I thought it would focus on being respectful towards others no matter their gender, but it was instead about how boys are falling behind in the school system more and more. It was a pragmatic prediction, but as we looked deeper into the article, we found that its underlying point was more about accepting and all students, not just those who fit into the cultural ideal. I thought an interesting quote from this was, The basic problem is that schools praise diversity, but have become culturally homogeneous. On Friday Ms. Frederick was absent, and I worked on my senior project weebly
Week of 2/20 - 2/24
There was no school Monday, and on Tuesday and Thursday we read and annotated Honor Code, and His Politeness is Her Powerlessness. With our table groups we answered questions about ethos, logos and pathos, and compared the two articles. There is one girl in my group who is particularly garrulous On Friday I was out sick.
Week of 2/27 - 3/3
This week started on Monday with finishing up the ethos, logos, and pathos assignment given from last week. Afterwards, we began reading and annotating, Prelude: The Barbershop. Throughout the rest of the week we read The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action, by Audre Lorde. There was a substitute on Thursday and Friday. We were given an assignment to create a conversation between Audre Lorde and another author. I chose Vershawn Ashanti Young as the other author because I felt as though Audre could persuade Vershawn to speak up about all of his insecurities rather than trying so hard to fit in.
Week of 3/6 - 3/10
On Monday I started off finishing up my conversation between authors assignment. After that we reviewed and worked on our writing task. For the rest of the week, the majority of time was spent on brainstorming and writing our writing task. I enjoy this assignment because I am given the chance to write about something that I am passionate about in our society. Something that I see as an issue and how I think it should change. I was absent on Thursday because of a doctor appointment, but Friday was a nice writing day.
Week of 3/13 - 3/17
This week was a continuation on writing and revising our essays that we began last week. On Monday someone peer edited what I have of my essay so far and I got some useful feedback. Tuesday we were given the whole time to work on these as well. On Thursday the class started with 30 minutes of reading and then we I am not in the best mood today because I am sitting at a table with two of my friends that are causing drama and Im somewhat afraid to speak to them. One of them in particular hasnt even looked at me and I am afraid for the class we have together later on. Also my stomach is growling. On Friday, I worked on my ERWC portfolio.
Week of 3/20 - 3/24
This week we started a new unit on the book 1984 by George Orwell. It seems like it is going to be an interesting book and I look forward to reading it. I like the futuristic idea that it has and the fact that it was written so long ago, but so greatly applies to life as we know it today. On Tuesday we answered some questions as a group to put in our reading journals. On Thursday we read for 30 minutes independently, and then we began reading 1984. So far, this book seems pretty interesting and I look forward to reading more of it.
Week of 4/3 - 4/7
First day back from break and Im not as tired as I thought I would be. School is such a perfunctory routine I guess its just easy to jump back into almost without even realizing it. Spring break was amazing though and I miss sleeping in. Today we took a quiz on what we have read of 1984 so far and I did not do very good because I only completed about half of my assigned reading over break. We continued reading the next chapters few on Tuesday, which was a Thursday schedule, and answered more questions within our groups and discussing with the class. On Thursday I was not in class because I presented my senior project later that afternoon and it went well! Now it is Friday and I am so happy to have completed that part of my project. In class today I worked on reading and answering questions for my 1984 journal. Also, I have a headache because I really need to buy new contacts, and in other news Im so excited for competition this weekend where my senior project dance will be competing!
Week of 4/10 - 4/14
This week started off with more reading and annotating of 1984. I have been answering plenty of questions in my journal and making annotations in my book as well. On block day I was pulled out of class because of a meeting with my counselor about Moorpark college so that I can get early registration! When I got back I took a quiz that was really easy because I have been keeping up with the reading this time. There was no school on Friday because it was Good Friday! Excited for Easter and getting together with my family this weekend.
Week of 4/17 - 4/21
There was no school on Monday this week because I think it was just a teacher day. On Tuesday it was block schedule and we began the class with going over homework for the week and then reading for 30 minutes. The rest of the week was used to finish reading part 2 and answer questions in our journal. I used my time on Friday to do the same but I need to work on my writing.
Week of 4/24 - 4/28
This week was an interesting and embellished week for me because it was state testing week so everyday was block day and I didnt start until 10:00 and 12:00 every day. It was really nice to sleep in. On Tuesday we wrote scripts of a new chapter when Julia and Winston are caught by the Thought Police. In this ending Winston wont do the dehumanizing tasks because he wants to find a better way. After that we read more of Part 3 chapter 1 and answered questions. On Thursday we also continued to read and finish the book. Friday was a work day and I almost finished reading the book. I have a feeling that the book is going to end with Winston being convinced that the government is right and that he is insane.
Week of 5/1 - 5/5
I finished reading 1984 this morning and the ending was very similar to what I predicted. I think that the world in which Winston is living in is very frightening. What is even more frightening, is the thought that with all of the technology that we have today, a world like that is very possible. I also worked on preparing for my socratic seminar today which I feel that I do not have enough time to prepare for and I am quite nervous. Tuesday was used for preparing for the socratic seminar as well. I found out that my prompt is going to be prompt #1-2. I discussed prompt 2 on Thursday about the nature of reality and it was the opposite of a prosaic discussion, it was a really fascinating discussion! Friday was a writing day and I began working on my essay and writing my thesis statement.
Week of 5/8 - 5/12
This week on Monday and Tuesday we were given time in class to work on our thesis statements and then complete our essays. I am doing pretty good on my essay and I believe that I have a really strong thesis statement. I am going to try and finish it tonight and if not then I will finish it on Wednesday. On Thursday the class started with 30 minutes of reading or working time and I am choosing to work on my learning log. I am tired and a little bit upset this morning because I made everybody late to school and I feel badly about it. I am also annoyed and confused about certain friends and they are nettling me but I am going to try to not let it ruin my day. Friday was a writing day and I worked on my reflection.
Week of 5/15 - 5/19
I was absent this week on Monday because I had a really bad stomach ache but I worked on my writing samples at home. On Tuesday I read and annotated my article, Understanding Bullying. It is an interesting insight to what bullying is and how it might be different than I thought. I found that there are different types of bullying and different types of victims. It also goes into what we can do to prevent it and help it. I really liked this article and am excited to share and discuss it with my group. On Thursday we had an hour long discussion outside. It was a great discussion and I felt very comfortable talking to all of them. It was good to hear what everyone had to say and how we can help this issue. Friday was a writing day and I worked on finishing my learning log and working on my writing samples.
Week of 5/22 - 5/26
This week we spent the whole week working on our final project. For this project I am working on the nature of bullying slide and examples of bullying within our school and also other schools. I also have been trying to finish all of my learning logs and and finish up my portfolio.
Week of 5/29 - 6/2
This being the final week of school, I have been preparing for the final in this class on thursday and finishing up all outside assignments and writing samples.
