INTRODUCTION

I. Do you snap in your seat belt as soon as you get in the car? Do you care your younger
brother or sister has the right safety seats for their weight and age? If you have
answered no, even just once, you need to hear me.
II. The seat belt is one of safety features to secure passengers by crossing their chest and
waist with a material belt that fastens at the side of the seat.
III. According to Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), wearing seat belts
and helmets improves the safety of road users by 60%.
A. MIROS director general, Prof Dr. Wong Shaw Voon said using safety features
like seat belts and helmets could effectively reduce fatalities and risks faced by
motorists and passengers during unfortunate circumstances like accidents.

B. Upon impact during accidents, safety seat belts will restrain the body in the
original position but to passengers who are not wearing the seat belts, they will
throw out or knock into hard objects, which result in serious injuries and
sometimes can lead to death.
IV. The reasons why people do not buckle up when there are plenty of strong reasons
encouraging the usage of seat belts are :
A. First, seat belts are perceived as uncomfortable and inconvenient.
1. The imaginary the discomfort and inconvenience of wearing a seat belt
the first few times in no way compare to the serious discomfort and
inconvenience of motor vehicle crash injury.
2. However, there is no discomfort or inconvenience once wearing the seat
belt becomes a habit.
B. Second, many believe that seat belts are unnecessary for a short trip.
1. One of the researchers concludes that two-thirds of crashes happen less
than 15 km away from home.
2. It was estimated that 70% of all road crash casualties without seat belts
were traveling at less than 50 km/h.
a. The impact of a collision at 50 km/h exactly same with a
person injured due to falling from the fourth floor of a building.
C. Third, no need to wear seat-belts, because some vehicles were equipped with an
airbag.
1. Airbags only provide protection in frontal crashes by protecting the head
and chest from hitting the steering wheel or dashboard.
2. But airbags will not help on a side or at back impact.
V. After doing extensive research for this speech, it made me realize the magnitude of this
problem and how easy the solution can be.
VI. Today I hope to persuade each of you to belt on for every journey, which could protect
their lives
VII. The seat belts pose a lot of benefits, which could save our life therefore, we must know
how to use them properly and always practice it.

BODY
I. It is been proven time and again, on back roads and superhighways, a seat belt can
save a life in a car accident
A. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more
than 15,000 lives are saved each year in the United States.
1. Because drivers and their passengers were wearing seat belts when they
were in accidents.
B. The benefits of seat belts are preventing drivers and passengers of the vehicle
from serious injury in five ways :
1. First, keep the drivers and passengers of the vehicle inside.
a. People think are better off being thrown clear from the crash but
the fact is people thrown from a vehicle are four times more likely
to be killed than those who remain inside.
2. Second, restrains the strongest parts of the body.
a. Restraints are designed to contact your body at its strongest parts.
b. For an older child and adult, these parts are the hips and
shoulders, which is where the seat belt should be strapped.
3. Third, spreads out any force from the collision.
a. Lap-and-shoulder belts spread the force of the crash over a wide
area of the body.
b. By putting less stress on any one area, they can help you avoid
serious injury.
c. A shoulder strap also helps keep your head and upper body away
from the dashboard, steering wheel, and other hard interior parts
of the automobile when you stop suddenly or be hit by another
vehicle.
4. Helps the body to slow down.
a. A quick change in speed could cause the injury, so seat belts help
extend the time it takes for you to slow down in a crash.
5. Protects your brain and spinal cord.
a. A seat belt is designed to protect these two critical areas, which
head injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they can be
deadly.

II. Furthermore, a seat-belt reduces fatality risk by 4560% rather than airbag only reduce
12%.
A. In order for seatbelts to reduce the risk of death or injury in a collision by 45-60%,
it must be worn properly:
1. Adjusting your seat belt properly by getting the right fit as wearing it.
a. Fit lap belt snugly across hips, not abdomen
b. Ensure belt sits firmly across the chest, never tucked under the
arm
2. Do not lie down the seat while wearing a seatbelt in a moving vehicle
a. Because this position can cause serious injury.
3. Allow only one passenger per belt.
III. Raised awareness among the road users about the use of the seat belt could make the
practice of using seat belt while driving persist in a long time.
A. The government needs to enforce the regulation to improve safety for everyone.
1. In Malaysian, Road Transport Department Malaysia stated, any vehicle
drivers and passengers found out not using the seat belt will be fined
under this new ruling, with a fine up to RM2000, or a maximum of a 1
year prison sentence, or both.
B. Any agencies need to take part in this awareness as a part of social
responsibility.
1. Toyota, which is the world's second-largest automotive manufacturer in
2016, was very concerned about this issue.
a. Toyota has launched a road safety campaign for the third year in a
row.
b. According to Hiroyuki Fukui, president of Toyota Motor Asia
Pacific, the objective of the campaign is to encourage drivers and
passengers to wear seat belts to ensure themselves and their
families safe.
c. In the campaign, Toyota has launched a mobile app called Seat
Selfie that helps to identify if the user is wearing a seat belt.
d. Toyota also posted the video is able to shed tears, entitled The
Promise as a medium that can promote people to be pro-active in
road safety.
e. I want to give credit to Toyota because of their contribution to
society and hope that we can support their campaign.
C. Moreover, other seat belt initiatives are television commercials, posters, and
other public advertisements will make the program a success.

CONCLUSION
I. The seat belts pose a lot of benefits, which could save our life therefore, we must know
how to use them properly and always practice it.
II. We know well why we must buckle up, front or back. And law or no law, fine or no fine,
so get in the habit of belting up
III. It is such a simple and easy action but it can save lives and reduce injuries from the
collision.
IV. Make a promise and be safety leader!
