knowledge to achieve fluent oral and silent reading.
Concept: Vocabulary and Concept Development
Standard 1.7: Understand and explain common antonyms and synonyms.

Lesson Summary
Lesson Objectives Students will learn new words that relate to other words and have the same meaning. Students will also learn words that are
opposite of other words.

Time Allotment and context 30 minutes

IMPLEMENTATION
Instructional Format/ Anticipatory Set/Engagement: During our first transition, I will shut off the lights to get the kids attention. Once I have it, I'll
Model ask them a few questions such as, "What is the opposite of off? Students response, "ON!!!" Then I would proceed to tell the
students to go back to their desks slowly and then I'll say, "FREEZE." Then I'll ask, "What is the opposite of slow?" Students
response, "FAST!!!" Then have the children proceed to their seats using the word they came up with in an orderly fashion.

Input: I will explain to the students that the opposite of off is on and those two words are antonyms. Then we'll move to the
words I have on the board and explain what synonyms are.

Modeling: The words on the board will include giant and tiny. I will ask the students to give me another name for giant
(large/big/enormous). Those are all synonyms which means that you can have one word that has many other words that mean
the same thing. Then we move on to the word tiny, etc. Following that, I will also introduce a short video clip to the students
about synonnyms and antonyms (during the video, students will write down any synonyms and antonyms in their personal
dictionary that were covered in the clip).

Guided Practice: Then provide each student with a word map. On the overhead projector, fill out the word maps with the
words from the board continually explaining what synonyms and antonyms are.

Check for Understanding: Ask the students if they understand what synonyms and antonyms are and if their are any
questions answer them. During their independent practice, walk around the class to see who got it and who might need more
help.

Independent Practice: First, have the students pair up and create a word map together using words of their choice. Have
group present their material to check for understanding and allow class involvement if they come up with other words for
other groups. Then have each student complete the worksheet that will cover synonyms and antonyms (circle the word that
is the same or opposite).

Closure: Ask the students if they understand what synonyms and antonyms are. Was one harder than the other? Then go over
the quiz with them. Read the words and let them write the synonym or antonym on their whiteboard.

Student Grouping Think-pair-share/2 per group

Differentiated Instruction Have some visuals to put up on the overhead projector. Use objects to show relationships between words. Reteach if
necessary.
