Theantiderivativeisthenamewesometimes,(rarely)givetotheoperationthatgoesbackwardfromthederivativeofa
functiontothefunctionitself.Sincethederivativedoesnotdeterminethefunctioncompletely(youcanaddanyconstantto
yourfunctionandthederivativewillbethesame),youhavetoaddadditionalinformationtogobacktoanexplicitfunctionas
antiderivative.

Thuswesometimessaythattheantiderivativeofafunctionisafunctionplusanarbitraryconstant.Thustheantiderivativeof
cosxis(sinx)+c.

Themorecommonnamefortheantiderivativeistheindefiniteintegral.Thisistheidenticalnotion,merelyadifferentname
forit.

Awavylineisusedasasymbolforit.Thusthesentence"theantiderivativeofcosxis(sinx)+c"isusuallystatedas:the
indefiniteintegralofcosxis(sinx)+c,andthisisgenerallywrittenas

Actuallythisisbadnotation.Thevariablexthatoccursontherightisavariableandrepresentstheargumentofthesine

Theantiderivativeofasumofseveraltermsisthesumoftheirantiderivatives.Thisfollowsfromthefactthatthederivativeof
asumisthesumofthederivativesoftheterms.Andsimilarly,multiplyingafunctionbyaconstantmultipliesits
antiderivativebythesameconstant.

Usingthesefactswecanfindtheantiderivativeofanypolynomial.
