(1) A sheet of insulating material (e.g. klingerite or similar material) at least 2 mm thick shall be inserted between support and pipe to avoid any direct contact.
(2) G denotes galvanized material.
(3) Carbon steel shapes, plates and bars ( A36 ) welded directly to the pipe shall have maximum Carbon content 0.23% and maximum Carbon Equivalent value 0.45%.
(4) Specified materials are minimum acceptable according to ASTM references. Contractor may use an equivalent material composition or upgraded for facilities of material
supply. Eg. A106 Gr.B pipe may be used in lieu of A53 Gr.B.

1) The requirements of this table are in accordance with those of ASME code B31.3.
3) SA= support thickness; SB= piping thickness; T= throat thickness of fillet welds: TS= tensile strength.
4) The side of fillet welds shall be 8/10 of the smaller thickness to be welded.
5) Welding operations may not be performed with an ambient temperature of less than -20C.
6) For ambient temperature of less than 5C, preheating shall be carried out notwithstanding the required conditions.
7) When lines are heat-treated for process purposes, verify whether support-piping welds are to be
heat-treated notwithstanding material characteristics.
In all events, heat treatment shall be performed for caustic soda service.
8) Based on material service and corrosion and not on mechanical considerations, some piping materials may require PWHT (ref.
Doc. no. 8474L-000-JSS-6300-002). Pipe Supports for these fluid services shall follow the same PWHT requirement as the
pipes.

PIPE SPAN TABLE FOR CARBON STEEL ( ALL SCH. ) , LOW AND INTERMEDIATE ALLOY STEEL ( ALL SCH. )
AND STAINLESS STEEL PIPES ( SCH. > 40 S )
NOTES :
1. Spans have been calculated based on the pipe wall thickness provided in Piping Material Specification.
2. For SS pipes the spans are valid for pipe thickness > 40S only. For SS SCH 10S pipes separate span table shall be
referred to Table 7.
3. Spans are valid for a maximum design temperature of 400 Deg. C ( unless noted otherwise ). For temperature
above 400 Deg. C or line size above 24", span shall be calculated for by stress analysis.

4. For CS SCH10 thick pipes these spans are valid up to a maximum design temperature of 150 Deg. C only.
5. Indicated pipe spans are not valid for other metallic piping such as Aluminium Alloy, Monel etc.
6. Indicated pipe spans are not valid for non-metallic piping such as GRE , PVC etc.
7. Free draining lines with slope requirements require additional check for these spans.
8. Indicated pipe spans are valid for straight pipe runs only. For other piping configurations the spans shall be multiplied
by a suitable factor ( Refer to sample figures below ).
9. The criteria for maximum allowed pipe span is based upon the minimum span calculated as per the following :
- Maximum pipe deflection < 12.5 mm.
- Maximum longitudinal bending stress < 0.25 Sh ( Sh = Allowable stress at the maximum design temperature )
10. Following data has been used in the span calculations :
- Density of insulation = 190 Kg / m3
- Insulation Thickness: 15DN = 25mm , 20DN = 50MM , 25-50DN = 80mm , 80-100DN = 90mm , > 150DN = 100mm.

8.1 General
These guidelines are to be used at site for small bore lines (below 2) which do not show
engineered supports on IFC isometrics.
It has to be noted that some critical small bore lines may show support definition and location on
IFC isometrics. All supports and pipe routing of such critical lines shall be respected and any
change due to unavoidable reasons shall be approved by the Stress Engineer.
Refer Section 9 (page of ) for list of Standard Supports dedicated to small bore lines.
