DISTRICT PROFILE
GOVERNMENT MEDICAL COLLEGE :

The Government of Tamil Nadu has announced formation of a new Government Medical
College in Perambalur District during the last budget session. An extent of land measuring
30.28 Acres in S.F.No. 292/1A etc, in Kunnam Village and Taluk was donated by one
Andimuthu Chinnapillai Trust and Patta transfer order has been effected in the name of
Director of Medical Education, Chennai. The foundation stone was laid by the Hon’ble
Deputy Chief Minister on 04.02.2010.

GOVERNMENT POLYTECHNIC :

The Government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned new Government Polytechnic in Perambalur
District. For this, Andimuthu Chinnapillai Trust has donated an extent of 2.15.0 Hectares in
S.F.No. 136/5, 137/3A2 etc., in Velur Village, Perambalur Taluk. The foundation stone was
laid by the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister on 04.02.2010.

MULTI PRODUCT SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE- PERAMBALUR (SEZ) :

An extent of 2767.58 Acres of Patta Lands have been purchased through private negotiation.
An extent of 171.49 Acres of Patta Lands, Bhoodan Lands, Hindu Religious Endowment
Board Lands and Village Temple Lands are now under land acquisition process under Tamil
Nadu Industrial Purposes Act,1997. An extent of 89.62 Acres of Water Course poromboke
Lands have been alienated to the Special Economic Zone by the Government. An extent of
45.14 Acres of Non-Water Poromboke Lands have to be alienated by the Government. By
setting up of this Multi-Product Special Economic Zone, 10,000 persons will get employment
directly and 15,000 persons will get employment indirectly in this district. SEZ, after setting
up, has the capacity to change the economy of the District.

MRF LIMITED, PERAMBALUR :

An extent of 280 Acres of Patta Lands have been purchased through private negotiation. An
extent of 16.65 Acres of Patta Lands are being acquired through Land Acquisition under
Tamil Nadu Industrial Purposes Act, 1997. The Land Acquisition process is going on and
nearing completion. The Notices under section 4(2) of Tamil Nadu Industrial Purposes Act
given already to the Land Owners. Among the Land owners, two individuals filed Writ
Petitions in No. 2616/2009 and 2617/2009 before the High Court, Madras. Counter Affidavit
have been filed in the High Court, Madras.

Due to the formation of M/s. MRF Private Limited Company, 800 persons will get
employment directly and 2,000 persons will get employment indirectly.
BYE-PASS ROAD, PERAMBALUR :

As per G.O (Rt) No.229, Highways and Minor Ports (HP2) Department, dated 27.11.2009,
orders were passed to provide Bye-Pass Road to Perambalur Town. The Government have
accorded administrative sanction. One land acquisition unit headed by the Special Tahsildar
has been sanctioned. At present, Survey work is going on. Action is being taken to issue
notice under section 15(2) of Land Acquisition under Tamil Nadu Highways Act. Bye-Pass
road will help the regulated growth of the fast growing Town of Perambalur.

MINERALS AND MINING :

The district is fairly rich in mineral deposits. Celeste, Lime Stone, Shale, Sand
Stone, Canker and Phosphate nodules occur at various places in the district. A good deal of
building stone (rough stone) is quarried in Perambalur , Kunnam and Veppanthattai Taluks.

PILGRIM CENTRES :

Siruvachur Madura Kaliamman temple at Siruvachur in Perambalur Taluk is one of the


most popular shrine in the district. The presiding deity of the temple is known as Sri Madura
Kaliamman. She is one of the forms of Goddess Kali.

Poojas are performed on Monday and Friday of every week. The main annual festival
commences in the last week of Panguni. The Car festival is celebrated in the first week of
Chithirai.

The Ancient Arulmigu Ekambareswar and Thandayuthapani Temples are situated in


Chettikulam Village, Perambalur District. The above temples were built by King Kulasekara
Pandian, some 800 years ago. These temples are situated 22 Kms. away from Perambalur and
8 Kms. west of Alathurgate on Trichy-Chennai National Highway (NH-45). These temples
reflect the architecture of the early days.

In Arulmigu Ekambareswarar temple, the Thai Poosam festival is celebrated every year in
the month of January for 10 days. At the time of the above festival, people from various
places visit the temple and get the blessings of Lord Shiva.

In the same way, Panguni Uthiram Festival is celebrated in Arulmigu Thandayuthapani


temple for 14 days in the month of April every year. The above festival is celebrated in a
grand manner and various cultural programmes are conducted at that time.

The rock outside Chettikulam Village on the top of which is located the Balathandapani
Temple. This is an ancient and well-known shrine built by the Cholas. There are number of
stone inscriptions explaining the history of the temple.

AGRICULTURE :
Sugarcane is grown as a major commercial crop. The Public Sector factory
Perambalur Sugar Mills at Eraiyur is functioning in the district with a crushing capacity of
3000 Tonnes per Day. The pre-dominate soil in the district is red sanding with scattered
pockets of black soil . The soil in the district is best suited for raising dry crops. The district
has a high means of temperature and low degree of humidity.

TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION :

Perambalur is an important road junction on the Chennai –Madurai National Highways


(NH-45). The District has well knit road system connecting various important centres in the
region.

TOURIST INTEREST :

Ranjankudi Fort is located about 17 Kms north of Perambalur . The Fort was built by
Jaginthar under Nawab of Carnatic in the 17th century AD. The Fort was the scene of battle of
Valikondah between the British and Mohamed Ali on one side and Chandha Sahib and the
French on the other side in 1751 AD. This Fort is under protection of Archaeological
Survey of India.

The ancient Arulmigu Ekambareswarar and Thandayudhapani Swamy Temples are


situated in Chettikulam village and was built by King Kulasekara Pandiyan 800 years ago.
Thai Poosam festival and Panguni Uthiram festivals are celeberated in a grand manner.

Mathura Kali Amman at Siruvachur is one of the most popular shrine in the district .
The presiding deity of the temple is known as Sri. Madura Kali Amman. She is one of the
forms of Kali.
