Design of Rectangular Water Tank

This document provides information for designing the walls of a rectangular water tank with dimensions of 8m length, 4m breadth, and 2.4m height. It specifies the material properties and design constants. It then calculates the bending moments and shear forces at critical sections of the walls. Finally, it performs checks to design the minimum required thickness of the walls. The walls must be at least 200mm thick to satisfy strength requirements for the given bending and shear loads.

Design of Rectangular Water tank (L/B <2)

1) Grade of concrete 30 Mpa

2) Length of tank 8 m
3) Breadth of tank 4 m
4) Ht of tank 2.4 m
5) Specific wt of water 9800 N/m3
6) Grade of steel 500 Mpa
7) Effective cover 35 mm

ii) Design Constants :

1) Permissible stress in compression 10 N/mm2

(cbc)

2) Permissible stress in steel 130 N/mm2

in tension(st)

3) Modular ratio (m) 10

4) k = (m x cbc)/((m x cbc)+st) 0.43

5) Lever arm constant: j = 1-(k/3) 0.86

6) R = 1/2 x cbc . j . K 1.86

7) L/B 2 < 2

iii) Moment and Shear :

Criticalsection is at H/4 or 1 m = 0.6 m

Hence take (H) = 1 m
Load at top (H-h) = 1.4 m

sigma cbt' = 0.4990 N/mm2
sigma cbt for M25 concrete = 2 N/mm2

sigma ct' = 0.07 N

sigma ct = 1.5 N/mm2
combine Tension + Bending check = 0.293 OK SAFE
{( cbt'/cbt)+(ct'/ct))<1}

Hence keep wall thickness = 310 mm

Effective thickness = 275 mm
Depth of NA = 119.57 mm

v) Reinforcement in Horizontal direction :

Eccentricity of tensile force = 393.333 mm

above eccentricity is from centre of wall section

Eccentricity of tensile force will = 273.333 mm

be meausre from centre of stee

Let area of tensile steel Ast , to find its value , take moment about the C.G of compression
Distance of the reinforcement from the C.G of compression zone

Ast = = 337.36 mm2

Spacing for reinforcement bar of = 336 mm
