Lesson Plan 4: Pterodactyl Puzzle Problems

Your Name: Caitlin Baumgarten
Name of Lesson Plan: Pterodactyl Puzzle Problems
Subject and Grade level: Math, 5th grade
Objective(s): Students will answer questions on a handout to solve to a degree of 80%
accuracy.

TEKS:

111.7. Mathematics, Grade 5, Adopted 2012

(3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to
develop and use strategies and methods for positive rational number computations in
order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected to:

(B) multiply with fluency a three-digit number by a two-digit number using the standard
algorithm;

(C) solve with proficiency for quotients of up to a four-digit dividend by a two-digit

divisor using strategies and the standard algorithm;

Teaching Procedure:

1. Motivation: Greet students at the door wearing dinosaur skirt with a Jurassic Park
Shirt, dinosaur jewelry etc. Have dinosaur skeleton pieces laid out on a table at the
front of the classroom.

2. Prior Learning: Basic math: addition, subtraction, multiplication of 1 and two digit
numbers, division of 1 and 2 digit numbers. Basic understanding of paleontology:
students should know what a pterodactyl is, they should know how to piece together a
puzzle.

3. Statement of Objective: Today we will be practicing multiplication and division of

two, three and four digit numbers. We will be completing a worksheet that will help
us piece together a 3d fossil!

4. Purpose (statement): We need to know how to multiply and divide two, three and
four digit numbers because we use it in everyday life in everything from calculating a
cars gas mileage to how much money you will earn in a year.

5. Instructional steps
Present New Information

Use the following to teach the multiplication concepts:

Place one number above the other so that the hundreds', tens' and ones'
places are lined up. Draw a line under the bottom number.

529
67

Multiply the two numbers in the ones' places. (9 * 7 = 63). This number is
larger than 9 so place a 6 above the tens' place column and place 3 below the
line in the ones' place column.

6
529
67
3

Multiply the digit in the top tens' place column (2) by the digit in the lower
ones' place column (7). The answer (2*7=14) is added to the 6 above the top
tens' place column to give an answer of 20. The 0 of 20 is placed below the
line and the 2 of the 20 is placed above the hundreds' place column.

Aggie, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work .

529

03

The hundreds' place of the top number (5) is multiplied by the ones' place of
the multiplier (5*7=35). The two that was previously carried to the hundreds'
place is added and the 37 is placed below the line.

26
529
67
3703

After 529 has been multiplied by 7 as shown above, 529 is multiplied by the
tens' place of the multiplier which is 6. The number is moved one place to the
left because we are multiplying by a tens' place number. The result would be
3174:

529

3174

A line is drawn under the lower product (3174) and the products are added
together to get the final answer of 35443.

Use this to teach the division:

To divide a four-digit number by a two-digit number (for example 3654 47), follow
these steps:
An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do. On my honor, as an
Aggie, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work .

Place the divisor (47) before the division bracket and place the dividend (3654)
under it.

47)3654

Examine the first two digits of the dividend (36). The number 36 is less than 47 so
it can't be divided by 47 to produce a whole number. Next take the first three
digits of the dividend (365) and determine how many 47's it contains. The number
365 contains seven 47's (7*47=329) but not eight (8*47=376). Place the 7 above
the division bracket and directly above the 5.

7
47)3654

Multiply the 7 by 47 and place the result (329) below the 365 of the dividend.

7
47)3654
329

Draw a line under the 329 and subtract it from 365 (365-329 = 36). Bring down
the 4 from 3654 and place it to the right of the 6 in 36.

7
47)3654
329
364

Divide 364 by 47 and place that answer above the division bracket to the right of
the 7.

Aggie, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work .

Multiply the 7 of the quotient by the divisor (47) to get 329 and place this below
the 364. Draw a line under the 329 and subtract 329 from 364 to get an answer of
35. The number 35 is smaller than 47 so it is called the "remainder" and indicates
that there were 35 left over.

Guided Practice
Work questions 1, 3, 5, 7, 13, 14 & 15 together as a class. Start out by showing
students how to solve question #1. Then slowly move towards the students doing the
problems on their own. Work through those questions and have students work with you,
follow along and have those as examples. Construct these pieces of the dinosaur as you
go. Allot 15 minutes of instruction time for this. As you work through these ask the
following questions:
What is the first step when multiplying?
What about for division?
Can you compose a song to remember the steps for multiplication or division?
Independent Practice
Students will solve questions 2, 4, 6, 8, 9-12 with a partner. Assign groups of
students specific questions so as to ensure that entire handout is completed during class.
Questions16-22 will be independent work. Allow 30 minutes for this to be completed.
Dinosaur will be constructed at end of class period. Whatever problems are not
completed will worked later in the week.
Questions

Future Learning:
Knowing how to do long division and long multiplication is very important for
your future. It will help you figure out things like how much food to give a tank of
