DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

ASSIGNMENT-1

Subject with code : MA1404, Engineering Mathematics-IV

1. When two dice are thrown, find the probability that

(i) The number 3 is in the first die
(ii) The sum of the numbers on the faces is 10, and
(iii) Sum of the numbers on the faces is 15.
[Ans. 1/6, 1/12, 0)
2. A, B and C are bidding for a contact. It is believed that A has exactly half the chance
that B has, B in turn is 4/5th as likely as C to win the contact. What is the probability
for each to win the contract? (Ans. 2/11, 4/11, 5/11)
3. A salesman is known to sell a product in 3 out of 5 attempts while another salesman
in 2 out of 5 attempts. Find the probability that no sale will be affected when they
both try to sell the product. [Ans. 6/25]
4. Urn I contains 3 green and 5 red balls. Urn II contains 2 green, one red and 2 yellow
ball. We select an urn at random and then draw one balls at random from that Urn.
What is the probability that we obtain a green ball? [Ans. 31/80]
5. Two Urns A and B contain respectively 2 white and 5 black balls, 3 white and 6
black balls. One ball is transformed from A to B and then a ball is drawn from B.
Find the probability that is a white ball. [Ans. 23/80]
6. Five cards are drawn from a pack of cards, find the probability that
(i) 4 are aces
(ii) 4 are aces and one is king
(iii) a king, queen, jack, 10 and 9 are obtained
(iv) 3 are of any suit and 2 are of another
[Ans, i) 0.000018, ii) 0.0000015, iii) 0.00039, iv 0.0257]
7. A company launches an advertising campaign of its new product on TV, radio and in
print media in an area where 30% watch TV, 50% listen to the radio and the rest rely
on newspaper for all information. It is estimated that a person who sees the
advertisement on TV will buy the product with probability 0.6. A person who had
heard it on radio is expected to buy the product with probability 0.3 and seeing the
advertisement in print will convince a person to buy the product with probability 0.1.
a consumer, chosen at random, is found to have purchased the product. What is the
probability she heard about the product on radio? [Ans. 0.428]
8. Due to turnover and absenteeism at an assembly plat, 20% of the items are assembled
by inexperienced employees. Management has determined that customers return 12%
of the items assembled by inexperienced employees, whereas only 3% of the items
assembled by experienced employees are returned. What is the probability that an
item was assembled by an inexperienced employee, given that the item was returned?
[Ans. 1/2]
9. In a certain town males and females are in equal percentage of the population. It is
known that 20% of the males and 5% of the females are unemployed. A research
student studying the employment situation selects unemployed persons at random.
What is the probability that the person selected is a i) male ii) female.
[Ans. i) 0.8, ii) 0.2]
10. Raj corporation produces electrical components utilizing three non-overlapping work
shifts. It is observed that 50%, 30% and 20% of the components are produced during
shift 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Furthermore, 6% , 10% and 8 % components produced
in shift 1,2 and 3 are defective. Determine:
a) What percentage of all components is defective?
b) Given that a defective component is found, what is the probability that it was
produced
c) During shift 3? [Ans. a) 0.076, b) 0.21]
11. The chances of A, B and C becoming the G.M. of a company are in the ration 4:2:3.
The probabilities that the bonus scheme will be introduced in the company. If A, B
and C become G.M. are 0.3, 0.7 and 0.8 respectively. If the bonus scheme has been
introduced, what is the probability that A has been appointed as G.M.? [Ans. 6/25]
