EvenProb12 8correction

This document provides the solution to a problem about the life expectancy of cell phone batteries. It finds that: 1) About 0.62% of batteries are expected to survive beyond 875 days. 2) Around 2.28% will survive fewer than 650 days. 3) A warranty of 686 days is needed so no more than 10% fail during the warranty period.

Even Problem 8-8 Correction

8. The life of a cell phone battery is normally distributed with a mean of 750 days and
standard deviation of 50 days.
a. What fraction of batteries is expected to survive beyond 875 days?
b. What fraction will survive fewer than 650 days?
c. Sketch the reliability function.
d. What length of warranty is needed so that no more than 10 percent of the
batteries will be expected to fail during the warranty period?

Answer

8. a) P(x > 875) = 0.5 - P(750 < x < 875)

875-750
P(750 < x < 875)= P (z < ----------------) = P (0 < z < 2.5) = 0.4938
50

Therefore, P(x > 875) = 0.5 - 0.4938 = 0.0062 or 0.62% should survive
beyond 875 days.

650 -750
b) P (x < 700) = P (z < -------------) = P (z < -2.0 )
50

Therefore, P (x < 880) = 0.5 - 0.4772 = 0.0228 or 2.28% should survive

less than 650 days.

c) The reliability function looks approximately as follows:

d) Let xw be the limit of the warranty period.

P (x < xw) = 0.10; z = -1.28, for z = x-750 = -1.28 , xw = 686 hours for
the
50 warranty limit.
