They must also demonstrate the chromatic scale across the full range of the instrument as well as major and melodic minor scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats spanning at least 2 octaves, and ideally 3 octaves, tongued and slurred at a minimum tempo of quarter note equals 60. Excerpts from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker are also required, including specific passages from Danse Russe Trepak, Pas de Deux and Sugar Plum Fairy Variation II.

    Candidates choice to be performed without accompaniment (3-4 minutes in length)

    Scales - memorized
    Chromatic scale slurred full range of instrument
    Major and melodic minor scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats a minimum of 2
    octaves (3 octaves when possible) tongued and slurred, performed in sixteenth
    notes at a minimum tempo of quarter note=60
