MD2 Solution

This document contains a mid-term exam for a Chemical Reaction Engineering course. It has two questions. Question 1 involves setting up a stoichiometric table and deriving a rate law for the gas-phase oxidation of ammonia to produce nitric oxide. Question 2 gives experimental data from a plug flow reactor and continuous stirred tank reactor and asks students to determine the activation energy of a reaction based on the provided information.

Q-1) (15 Marks)

Nitric acid is made commercially from nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is produced by the gas-phase
oxidation of ammonia.

4NH3 + 5O2 4NO + 6H2O

The feed consists of 15 mol% ammonia in air at 8.2 atm and 227C. Assume ideal gas.

a) Set up a stoichiometric table with ammonia as your basis of calculation by express

Concentration for all species as functions of conversion for a flow reactor.

b) Write rate law in terms of conversion. Assume the reaction is first order in both reactants.

Additional information:

R=0.082 atm.dm3/(mol.K),

Solution
Assume ideal gas behavior.

Therefore,

Entering concentration of ammonia

a) Stoichiometric Table
b) Combined mole balance and rate law
Q-2) (5-11) (10 Marks)

The gas phase reaction

A B + C
follows an elementary rate law and is to be carried out first in a PFR and then in a separate
experiment in a CSTR. When Pure A is fed to a 10 dm 3 PFR at 290 K and a volumetric flow rate
of 5 dm3/s, the conversion is 80%. When a mixture of 50% A and 50% inert (I) is fed to a 10 dm 3
CSTR at 330K and a volumetric flow rate of 5 dm 3/s the conversion is also 80%. What is the
activation energy in cal/mol?
