create a story of their own.
- Constantly monitor, and view student work as it progresses to make sure that the students writing is neat
and readable meeting grade 1 expectations.
- Give students sticky notes to let them know what they need to work on in their journal
PROCEDURE
Introduction Time

I will begin the class by asking the students to give me 5, and wait for their attention 5-8 minutes
before introducing the topic. I will let the students know that we will be working on a
new journal entry.

The task for this entry will be to imagine what it would be like if things that usually
couldnt talk were able to speak to us. What would our shoes say? How about our
chairs?

After this I will also make sure to set out a reminder of the expectations of the journals
which means using correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and finger spacing
their words. (Ask for help if needed)

Body Time

During this part of the lesson I will introduce the selected phrase to the students, and
together we will work through the sentence imagining things that somebody might fill 3-4 day assignment
in the blanks with before they have the opportunity to work by themselves.

The students will then brainstorm ideas by themselves as to what they might decide to
write in their journal. The phrase will be If my ________ could talk to me it would
say ________. I would tell my _____ _____.

After the students have an idea and have discussed this idea with me, and the people at
their table they will share their idea with the class. Additionally here I could make sure
that they are all on track with where I want this paper to go. After each student has
finished brainstorming they will have time to work on their journals selecting words
and phrases to fill in the empty spaces. Those students who finish early will be able to
expand their story, and really get creative with it as they begin with a rough copy.
Extra words can always be added to the assignment for students who may need it, and
complexity in regards to the difficulty of words chosen.

The last thing the students will do with their journal is to create a picture that
illustrates what they wrote in their sentence in a visual form.

Closure Time

To end off the lesson I will ask the students why its so important that we keep writing
in our journals, and what might we will be able to see from them 5-10 minutes
at the end of the year. After taking a few answers I will end the lesson having students
return their journals to the bin, and finish off the lesson so the students can transition
into their next class.
Assessment
The lesson will be assessed formally as the teacher goes around the classroom, and questions students for their
ideas as they brainstorm for their journal. Students journals will be assessed continually throughout the week as
3
teacher reads over their journal entries, and points of the errors in the students work. The teacher will also discuss
these errors if needed, and give the students a sticky note showing the corrections to be made.

Once all of the journals are completed the journals will be taken in and read to ensure that all students had a firm
grasp and understanding of the assignment. Additionally the journals will be summativley assessed in order to
provide feedback for the students.
