PEKA Physics Form 4 CHAPTER 4 : Heat

TITLE :Experiment 4.2 : THE GAS LAWS BOYLES LAW

INSTRUMENT :SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION EXPERIMENT REPORT

INSTRUCTION:
1. Prepare a report with the procedures for an Investigative Scientific Experiment from the
stimulus shown in the diagram.
2. Carry out the experiment in the lab to collect and record the data then interpret the
data and make a conclusion.
3. Write a task report

STIMULUS:

Amin is pumping air into his bicycles tyre. After a few minutes, he finds that hes
getting difficulty to push the piston downward.
APPARATUS : Glass syringe, a short rubber tube and Bourdon gauge
PROCEDURE :

1. The apparatus is set up as shown in the diagram above.

2. The piston of the syringe is adjusted until the volume of air, V, in the syringe is 100 cm3
at atmospheric pressure.
3. The syringe is connected to a Bourdon gauge and the pressure of the air, P, in the
syringe is observed and recorded.
4. The piston is then pushed in so that the volume of air trapped is 90 cm 3. The pressure is
again recorded, this procedure is repeated for enclosed volumes of 80cm 3, 70 cm3 and
60 cm3.
5. The value of the volume of air, V , the pressure of the air, P and 1/ V are recorded.
6. The graph of pressure of the air, P against 1/ V is plotted.

DISCUSSION:
1. Determine the gradient of the graph of pressure, P against 1/V .
2. Based on your graph, determine the pressure, P when the volume, V is 75 cm3.
3. The above experiment can be explained by a Boyles law. State Boyles law.

Task Report Format:

1. Date 8. Arrangement of the apparatus .
2. Title 9. The procedure of the experiment.
3. Aim of the experiment. 10.Result
4. Inference 11.Graph
5. Hypothesis 12.Discussion.

1 CI PI 1 Inference : The pressure of the gas depends on the volume.

(PART 1)
2 CI PI 2 Hypothesis : When the volume increase , the pressure is decrease.
(PART 1)
3 CI PI 3 Aim : To study the relationship between volume and pressure of the
(PART 1) gas .
4 CI PI 4 Manipulated variable : Gas volume ,V
(PART 1) Responding variable : Gas Pressure, P
5 Constant (fixed) variable : Gas temperature, T or mass of gas, m
6 CI PI 1 Apparatus and Materials: Glass syringe, a short rubber tube and Bourdon gauge
(PART 2)
7 CI PI 2 Arrangement of apparatus :
(PART 2)

8 CI PI 3 The procedure of the experiment.

(PART 2) 1. The apparatus is set up as shown in the diagram above.

Discussion :
CIV P4 1. Gradient of the graph = .. Nm-2 cm3.
CIV P5 2. when the volume, V is 75 cm3, 1/V = P = .. Nm-2

Conclusion ; Pressure of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its

CIV P6 volume.

CIV P7 Precaution; 1. The rubber tube was fixed tightly to prevent leakage.
2. When taking the readings of volume and pressure, position the eye
perpendicularly to avoid parallax error.
