1. WHAT IS THE TSB-GENERATOR?

The transport and shipment document (TSB - VDA4939) was developed and released in
2002 on behalf of the VDA Committee for E-commerce and logistics. The TSB-Generator
VDA4939 is used by Volkswagen AG.
The TSB-Generator can generate accompanying papers, including barcodes in accordance
with VDA4939.
The TSB-Generator imports a transit declaration from VDA4913 or DESADV and converts it
into transport shipment documents according to VDA4939.

2. HOW MUCH DOES THE TSB-GENERATOR COST?

The TSB-Generator is free of charge. Please note that Internet connection costs may apply,
depending on your Internet service provider.

3. WHO SHOULD USE THE TSB-GENERATOR?

Users are EDI suppliers according to VDA4913 / DESADV who are unable to generate PDF
labels/TSBs with their own software.

4. CAN I USE THE TSB-GENERATOR WITHIN MY NETWORK?

Yes. You can find more information concerning how to use the TSB-Generator network
capabilities in the TSB-Generator User Guide.

5. I HAVE MULTIPLE SUPPLIER MASTER DATA AND LOCATIONS. HOW

DO I INSTALL THE TSB-GENERATOR?
The TSB-Generator supports the multi-client capability which means that you can save
multiple supplier master data in the TSB-Generator. For more details please read the TSB-
Generator User Guide.

6. WHICH OPERATING SYSTEM AND WHICH SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS DO

I HAVE TO MEET FOR THE TSB-GENERATOR TO WORK PROPERLY?
The TSB-Generator is a JAVA application which makes it platform independent. There might
be restrictions in very rare cases. It is recommended to read the information concerning the

system requirements in the TSB-Generator User Guide before installing the components and
the TSB-Generator.

7. DO I HAVE TO INSTALL/OPERATE OTHER SOFTWARE TO USE THE

TSB-GENERATOR?
Yes. You will have to install Adobe Reader version 6 or higher or Ghostscript to be able to
print TSB Documents. To start the TSB-Generator you will need to install a Java Runtime
Environment (JRE) Version 1.4.2. or 1.5 (5.0). You will find more information in the TSB-
Generator User Guide.

8. WHICH IMPORT FORMATS CAN BE USED WITH THE TSB-GENERATOR?

The TSB-Generator can read VDA4913 or DESADV in ASCII or EBCDIC format.

9. WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE CONSIDERED WHEN USING

THE TSB-GENERATOR?
The following guidelines where considered when developing the TSB-Generator.:

10. DOES THE TSB-GENERATOR CHECK THE INPUT DATA?

The TSB-Generator performs only limited checks. As long as the input data has a correct
VDA4913 or DESADV structure, the TSB-Generator will try to interpret the input data even
with mistakes.

The EDI guidelines provide specific sentence structures, superstructures, hierarchical levels
and descriptions that are necessary to ensure a correct conversion to a VDA4939. That does
not mean that these can be used for test purposes in the TSB-Generators.

11. HOW TO RECOGNIZE WHETHER THE VDA4939 IS CORRECT OR NOT IF

IT IS NOT CHECKED?
You will be notified by Volkswagen if your VDA4913 or DESADV has errors when submitting
to Volkswagen via EDI.
Once these corrections have been taken into account or your VDA4913 or DESADV does
not have any errors, these data will also be correct in your VDA4939.

Please note that the data processed and displayed in the VDA4939 is only partly included in
the VDA4913 or DESADV. These are master data and other information which you have
saved in the TSB-Generator.

12. WHAT DO I DO IF THE ADRESS INFORMATION IN THE TSB-DOCUMENT

RECORD IS NOT CORRECT?
Check the address information in the master data of the TSB-Generator. You will find more
information in the user manual on how to create and manage the master data. If the data still
do not match, then check the supplier number/index included in the import data record.
Correct the entries in accordance with the information in the TSB-Generator or add it.

13. I HAVE MY OWN DOCUMENTS ACCORDING TO VDA4939 AND ONLY

NEED THE 2D CODES AND BARCODES. CAN I USE THE TSB-GENERATOR
FOR THAT PURPOSE?
Yes. You can select in the settings whether you need the 2D barcodes as separate files. The
TSB-Generator converts the import data record into codes and saves them as graphic files in
the output folder. For more details concerning how to create 2D barcodes with the TSB-
Generator, please refer to the TSB-Generator user guide.

14. HOW ARE THE 2D BARCODE IMAGE FILES NAMED?

The naming scheme is:
PDF417_XXX_YY.png
XXX being the shipment number or consignment number and YY is the label number,
starting at 1
E.g. PDF 417_T001_1.png, PDF417_T001_2.png, PDF417_SN11020001_1.png

15. THE TSB-GENERATOR CAN COMPRESS 1108 CHARACTERS INTO THE

2D BARCODE, WHY ARE ONLY 1000 CHARACTERS COMPRESSED?
In the 2D barcode are 0-255 ASCII CODE compressed. That is necessary because of non-
printable characters in the VDA4939. This results in a reduction in the compression degree.

16. I NEED THE 2D-LABELS IN ANOTHER SIZE. WHAT DO I DO?

You can set the size and position of the Labels to mm using the TSB-Generator properties.
Please refer to the TSB-Generator User Guide for more details.

17. DOES THE TSB-GENERATOR HAVE A CONNECTION TO OTHER

PROGRAMS, OR TO VOLKSWAGEN THROUGH THE INTERNET?
No. The application does not establish any connection to external programs, or to the
Internet. The TSB-Generator does not send data to any other system.

18. DOES THE TSB-GENERATOR CHANGE MY DESADV OR VDA4913 INPUT

DATA?
No. The TSB-Generator does not affect the input data. It reads the data and creates a
VDA4939. This VDA4939 will be then saved as a *:PDF in a specified directory.

19. DOES THE TSB-GENERATOR SEND THE VDA4939 TO VOLKSWAGEN?

No. The VDA4939 is a specification for transport documents. The application also generates
no further data for the EDI message traffic.

20. CAN I MANUALLY CREATE A VDA4939 USING THE TSB-GENERATOR?

No. The data origin for a VDA4939 is the VDA4913 or DESADV. These must be created
within an internal system.

21. I WANT TO MAKE MY OWN LANGUAGE SETTINGS. WHERE CAN I FIND

THE PROGRAM TEXTS?
The texts of interface elements (such as buttons or table headings, etc.) are saved under
GuiLabels_XX.properties.
The texts of error messages and other messages are saved in the file
Messages_XX.properties.
The texts used to create VDA4939 documents are saved in the file
VDA4939_Texte_XXX.properties.
The XXX is to be replaced with the language abbreviation, e.g. de, en, cz. These
abbreviations consist of two lowercase letters and are defined in the ISO-639. Here you can
find the complete list of language codes:

22. HOW CAN I CREATE TEXTS WITH LINE BREAKS IN THE LANGUAGE
FILES?
Line breaks are made using \n, e.g. Anzahl\nLadeeinh.
Note: This especially applies to the VDA4939 texts. Texts over several lines, however,
cannot be displayed in all parts of the program interface.

23. THE PRINTOUT OF MY 2D BARCODES IS BLURRED, WHAT DO I DO?

Deactivate "Smooth Images" and Smooth Line Arts" in the Acrobat basic settings.

24. WHY IS THE LABEL FILE A *.PNG?

The *.bmp format is restricted to windows systems and other formats are partially subject to
copyright. The format *.PNG, on the other hand, can be used in almost all common operating
systems.

25. TSB-DOCUMENTS ARE NOT PRINTED, WHAT DO I DO?

Check first whether you have installed a valid Adobe Reader. If so, check that the path is
correctly set. The path for Acrobat 6.0 under Windows is for example C:\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe. Then check whether the files
were created in the correct directory, and if you can open them with Adobe Reader.
If an error occurs, the Adobe Reader displays a message to be confirmed with OK. That
means that the Adobe Reader is not yet ready and that the automatic mode of the TSB-
Generator will be blocked.
We recommend using Ghostscript in the automatic mode (see question 29).
Check whether you have the correct printer (supplier master data) and whether this printer is
capable to respond to your computer.

26. THERE IS NO ADOBE READER PROGRAM WHICH IS COMPATIBLE

WITH MY OPERATING SYSTEM; CAN I USE ALTERNATIVE SOFTWARE?
Yes. Alternatively, you can use Ghostscript. Ghostscript is license free the most recent
version for your OS can be downloaded from http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/.
Please refer to the instructions and documentation you can get from Ghostscript or ask your
system administrator on how to install Ghostscript.
The license terms and conditions of Ghostscript apply.
In order to use the TSB-Generator in the automatic mode we recommend Ghostscript

27. ALREADY IMPORTED FILES ARE NOT IMPORTED AGAIN IN THE

AUTOMATIC MODE. WHAT DO I DO?
This feature prevents that files are accidentally repeatedly imported and produced. If
previously processed files have to be imported again because the printer has not printed
correctly, for example, you must reset the Time stamp of the TSB-Generator.
For this, edit the file LastInputDirScan.properties in the directory C:\Program
Files\TSB-Generator\config as follows:

Save and close the changes and restart the TSB-Generator. All DESADV AND VDA4913
files in the input directory are imported again.

28. WHICH SIZE DOES THE COMPANY LOGO NEED TO HAVE?

It can be of any size, but will be resized to 35 pixels height. The aspect ratio remains the
same. It is advantageous if the logo file does not differ too much from this size, otherwise the
scaling picture information is lost and "stairs" or "blocks" can arise.

29. DO I HAVE TO SET THE PRINTER DRIVER AND PORT?

Printer driver and port are optional, and are only used on Windows systems and supported
only to print using Adobe Acrobat.

30. HOW IS THE TRANSPORT NUMBER DETERMINED?

The transport number of each TSB Generator installation is identified separately. The
number is incremented with every input file.

The file config/TransportNumberCounter.properties contains a

FIRST_TRANSPORT_NUMBER entry which specifies at which point the counting begins. The
value LAST_TRANSPORT_NUMBER determines the last assigned number. The counting
starts from scratch at the value assigned with the FIRST_TRANSPORT_NUMBER. This makes
the transport number unique per each calendar day.
If a supplier has several installations of the TSB, the transport number can be definitely
assigned by assigning different for FIRST_TRANSPORT_NUMBER, for example
FIRST_TRANSPORT_NUMBER = 1 for the first installation and FIRST_TRANSPORT_NUMBER
= 1000 for the second installation. It only needs to be ensured that the second value is
chosen large enough. It will then assign the transport numbers
1, 2, 3, 4...
and
1001, 1002, 1003, 1004...

31. WHAT DOES THIS ERROR MESSAGE MEAN "ERROR WHILE READING
THE FILE: JAVA.LANG.NULLPOINTEREXCEPTION"?
You have tried to process a file that does not comply with the format requirements for
VDA4913 or DESADV, or that does not specify a supplier from the supplier master data.

32. THE TSB-GENERATOR FREEZES IN AUTOMATIC MODE AND THE

PRINT/DISPLAY PROGRAM ADOBE ACROBAT SHOWS ONLY THE FIRST
DOCUMENT RECORD. WHAT DO I DO?
You are probably not using Adobe Reader 6.0 for the automatic mode. Only the Adobe
Reader Version 6.0 is supported by the TSB-Generator. Other versions (e.g. 7.0) expect that
the user manually closes the Adobe Reader after displaying the first document record. As far
as this does not happen, the TSB-Generator will not generate further output data.
If the next data record is opened, the Adobe Reader default printer will be addressed.

We recommend using Ghostscript when operating in automatic mode (see question 29).

33. WHAT DOES THES ERROR MESSAGE MEAN ERROR WHEN

IMPORTING THE FILE: JAVA.LANG.NUMBERFORMATEXCEPTION: FOR INPUT
STRING XX?
The VDA or DESADV input file does not correspond to the basic format requirements, such
as the length of a record type (e.g. XX stands here for "71"). Please correct these errors in
the input file and restart the read process again. You can read in question 10 which
requirements must be fulfilled.

If you receive this message only if you have converted your input file from ASCII</> EBCDIC,
please check the properties of your converter if the required blanks (VDA4913 128 bytes per
line) were removed while converting.
Please note that the TSB-Generator can handle EBCDIC files, too. Select the required
settings under >Program<.

34. THE TSB-GENERATOR MUST BE RE-INSTALLED, MEANWHILE THE

RECIPIENT MASTER DATA FILE WAS UPDATED, HOW CAN I KEEP THE
UPDATED FILE?
The TSB-Generator detects when reinstalling if the existing file is more recent than the one
to be installed. In this case, answer the question about overwriting the existing recipient files
with No.

35. WHEN STARTING THE TSB-GENERATOR, A JAVA EXCEPTION ERROR

IS DISPLAYED WITH THE FOLLOWING ERROR MESSAGE
JAVA.LANG.NOSUCHMETHODERORR
The JAVA Runtime Environment on the target machine does not correspond to the 5.0
version (1.5). Install the JAVA Runtime Environment BEFORE installing the TSB-Generator.
If the TSB-Generator is already installed, you must first uninstall it. For more information
please refer to the TSB-Generator User Guide.

36. THE INSTALLATION WAS NOT SUCCESSEFUL. THE ERROR MESSAGE

NO MATCH WITH MAGIC NUMBER/ERROR CHECKSUM IS DISPLAYED.
The installation package of the TSB-Generator was not fully downloaded on the target
machine. Try to download the TSB-Generator again, and check your Internet connection.

37. I HAVE A FIREWALL. DO I HAVE TO RECONFIGURE THE TSB-

GENERATOR?
The TSB-Generator does not connect to the Internet. Thus, there are no settings required for
the TSB-Generator for an Internet connection. However, your firewall may not allow
executable files to be downloaded for safety reasons. Therefore contact your system
administrator. If you are planning to use the TSB-Generator within your local network, please
check your networks settings there.

38. WHEN STARTING THE TSB-GENERATORS A FATAL APLICATION

ERROR IS DISPLAYED: UNABLE TO LAUNCH JAVA APPLICATION
This error message may have two reasons:
1. You are using an incomplete or outdated Java Runtime Environment. Please refer to the
TSB-Generator User Guide on how to install the Java Runtime Environment.
2. You have installed the Java Runtime Environment AFTER installing the TSB-Generator.
Uninstall the Java Runtime Environment AND the TSB-Generator from your computer.
Reinstall the Java Runtime Environment in the correct order first and then the TSB-
Generator.

39. WHILE USING THE AUTOMATIC MODE, I NEED TO PRINT SEVERAL

COPIES OF THE DOCUMENT. WHICH SETTINGS DO I HAVE TO MAKE?
Change the settings in this directory X:\TSB-Generator\scripts; please make a backup of the
file before proceeding.
For Adobe Acrobat:
print_pdf_acrobat_windows.bat for Windows
print_pdf_acrobat_unix.sh for UNIX
Open the file with a text editor (e.g. Editor) and rewrite the program call multiple times

This message shows that there is one blank too much after C:\, e.g.

Check and adjust the settings under >Program< in the TSB-Generator under >Document
generation< or if the error is due to an incorrectly registered directory referring to
>Directories<.

41. WHAT DOES THE VALUE LAST_INPUTDIR_SCAN=1132918411376 (EXAMPLE)

MEAN?
The value represents the date of last access to the IN-Directory when using the automatic
mode.
Only files after this date will be imported. It refers to the number of seconds since 1.1.1970
(internal format used by Java to store date values).

If the value is replaced by 0, all files in the directory will be read, even those which already
have been read (see question 30).

42. CAN I START THE TSB-GENERATOR DIRECTLY IN THE AUTOMATIC

MODE?
Yes. When starting the TSB-Generator, you can set the parameter automatic. As a result,
the TSB-Generator starts immediately in the automatic mode.
This is the case under Windows systems e.g. under "target" in the program shortcut in the
form
TSB-Generator.exe automatic
On UNIX systems, this option is also available as a start-parameter.

43. NOT ALL FILES ARE PRINTED WHEN TRYING TO PROCESS MANY
FILES SIMULTANEOUSLY.
If multiple input files are processed simultaneously, individual files might be skipped and not
printed when printing using Ghostscript.
To avoid this problem, the files will only be processed one after the other after a waiting
period. The waiting period is set to three seconds by default. This can be changed in the
program configuration. This functionality is applicable from the version 1.33.
The value is the duration in milliseconds which one has to wait after each call of the print
script before calling up the script for the next PDF file. If the problem persists, the waiting
period should be in incremented by 1000 milliseconds (= 1s).
