Icebreaker Speech

The speaker shares about failures in their life to introduce themselves during an icebreaker speech. They failed nursing school after failing one subject, so switched to architecture which they loved. However, it took them seven years to complete architecture instead of the usual five due to failing multiple classes including math, CAD, and design. They view these failures as motivating them to finish what they wanted and get their dream job. The speaker is proud to be determined and lets no failures stop them from pursuing their passions.

ICEBREAKER SPEECH

Mr./Madam Toastmaster, ladies and gentlemen, good evening.

Ellen DeGeneres once said that, It is failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.
Today, as I introduce to you myself, I wont be talking about my achievements nor the things that
make me happy. Rather, let me share to you about my failures in life. Yes, my failures. Not that
its easier to remember them but because these failures are the exact reasons why Im standing in
front of all of you today.

I was born on April 1st, 1989 to Wilmero Antonio and Josephine Cristine Cordon-Antonio. I was
born and raised here in Manila. I have one brother, Myco, whos also working already. I studied
elementary and high school in a private school in Las-Pias. When it was time for me to go to
college, I think not all of you know that I first took up Nursing at Manila Doctors College. Yes,
nursing. Well, it didnt go well as planned by my parents. I failed one subject during my second
year. It broke my parents hearts but for me, well it was normal. I wasnt the studious type of
person. I remember when I was in elementary and high school, I always got those line of 7s and
was always a candidate for summer class. Going back to college, when I failed one subject, I
decided to talk to my parents and tell them that nursing wasnt really what I wanted. After a
series of long talks and pray overs, they finally let me take the course that I really wanted ,
ARCHITECTURE. I took up Bachelor of Science in Architecture at Far Eastern University. I can
go on and on and on telling you how much I love buildings, landscapes, details and drawing but
as what Ive said earlier, this is not about those things. Maybe youre guessing that I finished
Architecture with flying colors since its what I wanted, right? Wrong. Like what Ive said, I am
not the studious type. It takes 5 years to finish Architecture. Guess how many years it took
me.. SEVEN. I failed twice in Math, once in CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) class and once
in Design, which is a major, major subject. I was most of the time in the Deans office and he
would always ask me, Are you collecting 3s? or in Filipino, Nangongolekta ka ba ng
TRES?. A lot of my friends and batch mates already dropped out of school or shifted to another
course. Well, me, I didnt. I used these failures to help me finish the course that I wanted and to
get the future job that I have always dreamed of. I used these failures to motivate me to become a
better student and to become a better person.

It all boils down to one trait that I have always been proud of and that is being determined. I may
have failed a lot of times but it never stopped me from doing what I love to do and what I am
passionate about because as Tory Lanez said, From passion, all is possible. And that goes to
every aspect in my life. Whenever I like or love something, whenever I set a goal for myself, I
will do whatever it takes to have it or to reach it and no hindrances nor failure will ever stop me.

Thank you. Over to you, Mr./Madam Toastmaster.
