Define The Following Terms Including Its Diagram or Figure To Easily Understand

This document defines 17 terms related to fatigue and failure analysis, including stress concentration, variable load, completely reversed cyclic stress, and fatigue stress concentration factor. It also provides 3 example problems involving calculating maximum stresses in notched or loaded components, along with the answers. Key terms and concepts covered include stress concentration, variable and cyclic loading, combined stresses, notch sensitivity, and methods for analyzing stress concentrations including strain gage, photoelasticity, and grid methods.

Define the following terms including its diagram or figure to easily

understand:

a. Stress concentration
b. Variable load
c. Completely reversed or cyclic stress
d. Fluctuating stress
e. Repeated stress
f. Combined stress
g. Notch sensitivity
h. Load factor
i. Surface finish factor
j. Reliability factor
k. Miscellaneous factor
l. Fatigue stress concentration factor
m. Strain gage method
n. Photo elasticity method
o. Brittle coating technique
p. Grid method
q. Methods of reducing concentration factor

Solve the problem (Notch problems):

1. The flat bar shown in figure below is 10 mm thick and is pulled by a force P
producing a total change in length of 0.2 mm. Determine the maximum
stress developed in the bar. Take E= 200 GPa. Ans. h = 114.28 MPa

2. Find the maximum stress developed in a stepped shaft subjected to a

twisting moment of 100 Nm as shown in figure below. What would be the
maximum stress developed if a bending moment of 150 Nm is applied. Ans.
max = 83.75 MPa

3. In the plate shown in figure below, it is required that the stress

concentration at Hole does not exceed that at the fillet. Determine the
hole diameter. Ans. d=35mm
