INTRODUCTION
An information system is a system that take resources as
input and processes them into information product as
output.
Information system is an organized combination of people,
hardware, software, network and data resources.

SCOPE OF MIS IMPLEMENTATION

MIS are primarily concerned with the new delivery of
information (external and internal) to the organisational
members from the shop floor workers to the management.
It help the smooth running of the business by providing
the information on the firms data employee from different
levels will then evaluate this information so that decisions
can be made to ensure that the business remains
competitive and successful.
MIS have been created to support the whole range of
businesss administration and regulatory activities.
MIS systems need to be able to cope with these changes
and the managers need to ensure that they are receiving
the correct information, which will allow them to deal with
these changes and make decisions accordingly.
HOW MIS HELPS MANAGER
It help to know details about the daily transaction.
To easily calculate profit and loss.
To take decision quick and accurate with the help of MIS.
To know the regularity of the employees.
They use a storing device to store all transaction per day.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
Operating System
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft XP Professional platform,
by focusing on such platform, we get the lowest possible total
cost of ownership combined with the reliability that we expect
for our network.
The billing process is maintained by software named-
WincoreMaxdrop(TPL-Nx).The billing is done using Bar Code
scanner and this Transactional data is recorded by setting the
parameters as SOD(Starting of the day) and EOD(End of the
day). The staffs use their login Id and password to login for this.
Z- report of all these recorded transactions is automatically
fired to the SAP. The whole generated data is sent to Mumbai
HO and the MIS is generated at the HO and sent back till the
next morning by 9am.This report is known as Daily Business
Report(DBR) which is sent via mail to the various stores.
The typical use of different version is listed below:
Clients - Windows XP Professional
Middle Tier - Windows 2000 server
Database - Windows XP
Windows 2000 benefits are:
Greater Reliability
Greater Scalability
Unparalleled Multi Language support
Windows XP Professional benefits are
Easier to Manage
Higher Levels of Security
Terminal Server

Language:
Languages used for designing the website are HTML (Hyper
Text Markup Language)

Hardware Requirements
The hardware of information system for big bazaar will be built
on three tier architecture, comprising pc based clients,
clustered server and the database server.
THREE TIER APPROACH
1. Client: The client represents the face of IS, through which
data relating to various retail operations could be keyed in
and data stored in database can be extracted.

2. Application Server: The middle tier will comprise of

clustered servers also called transaction servers, as they
facilitate transactions taking place in the big bazaar. The
clustering of servers will be done through the MS Windows
2000 clustering service. This is essential for the system to
handle high workloads, especially during peak hours. The
middle tier will serve as an interface between the clients
and the database.

3. Database: The database server will receive and process

queries received from the middle tier transaction servers.
All the data will be stored in this database server.
Information System in BIG BAZAAR
Along with the three tier system various other equipments are
required. Bar code scanners enable you to collect detailed data
regarding products that your customers purchaseinformation
that is useful for inventory management, merchandising and
marketing decisions. Successful retailers use this information in
data warehousing applications to fine-tune store assortments
and help assure that consumers find the products that they
want on the shelves, when they shop.
A quality scanner that reads bar codes on the first try will speed
checkout and lead to cashiers who are more comfortable and
less frustrated. A pleasant cashier will transfer this positive
energy to customers.
Electronic payment peripherals enable you to readily and
efficiently handle credit and debit card transactions. Among
these are terminals that not only process electronic payment
but also capture signatures electronically. A signature capture
terminal incorporates a credit/debit card reader, provides
means to enter a PIN number, and includes a display for other
customer input (e.g. for market surveys) and graphics-based
advertising.
Printers
Modems
PCs
Gateway
Router
Increases operating efficiency across stores using wide-area
networks (WANs) and virtual private networks (VPNs)
Uses wireless technologies at the point of sale for faster
checkout and real-time product information, in the store to
improve operations, and throughout the supply chain to reduce
cost.
Use Of IT

Architecture Deployed
Information System of Big Bazaar:
Function of MIS: Two centralized servers are used by the MIS
viz. The main server and The other a backup server which can
take over from the main server with-in 5 min, if there is any
problem. Each of the servers has its own storage system with
mirroring hard disks (15 hard disks storing the same info
simultaneously). The information is backed up continuously on
CDs every day. The entire system is backed by an excellent
electrical wiring by JD International (electrical maintenance
dept).

Other sources of information:

Foot Fall Machine
It obtains the data of Entry and Exit at the store by counting the
foot falls into and out the store. According to this data
calculation is done regarding Sales to the Total entry and also
the Avg billing per customer. This is further used to take
managerial decisions.

Big Bazaar Payback Club(BBPC)

The customers are enrolled under this scheme and are given
the Loyalty/Membership Cards. This helps fetching the
consumer data such as Name, Phone Number, Sex, Age and
Address. All these data are used to predict buying behaviour of
the consumers and prepare various policies and offers which is
consumer specific.
Message blasts are also done to make consumers aware of the
offers and discounts.

Customer Feedback/Complains
The software named SHAHKARI is available which is responsible
for recording the consumer feedbacks and complains. This
helps in better management of the customer relationship. Thus
it also helps in following an outside in strategy for the
management.

Function of MIS:
There are 15 transaction counters in Big Bazaar. The recording
of transactions at each of these counters is done using REM.
The database used for the storage is called POSH database and
this is an in-house production of Big Bazaar. These transaction
counters can capture credit card details and customer
information of big customers (though all the information
relating to all the customers is not collected as of now).

Receipts of transactions are cash, credit or in the form of

Sodexho passes. The Sodexho passes are sent to the HQ on a
monthly basis and converted to cash. The number of
transactions made per day varies from 3000- 4000 on week
days to about 5000- 6000 on weekends. Any transaction
recorded at each terminal is stored directly onto the POSH
database. Oracle finance: a package from oracle is used for this
purpose. The financials are sent to the HO on a daily basis.
Benchmarking of the MIS
The following parameters can be used for benchmarking the
system. Foundation data and analytics, Billing Management,
Labour Management, Warehouse management, Item and price
synchronization solution, Transportation, Procurement, Supplier
Enablement Integration Platform.

Weakness:
One major shortcoming of the information system is that it
does not help the organization in measuring the
performance of employees and that can create several HR
problems for the organization Process is too much time
taking. Erroneous billing structure at e-billing counters as
most of the time new offers are not updated regularly.
Manual Tasks being computerized leads to loss of Job
opportunities.
Skilled Employees and staffs requires.
Possibility of unauthorized access and snooping
Reliability on IT may hinder the functioning in case of
network or power failure.

BENEFITS AFTER IMPLEMENTATION

Able to highlight the strength and weakness due to the

presence of revenue reports, employee's performance report
etc
Giving an overall picture of the company and act as a
communication tool.
Availability of customer data and feedback can help the
company to align their business process according to their
customer needs. The consumer buying trends and behaviours
can be predicted by the analysis of sales and revenue reports of
each operating region of the company.

Conclusion
With the help of this project we came to know that how
information system is helpful to the retail sector. Use of
information system in retail sector is resulting in an exponential
increase in the sales, customer relationships etc.
Simultaneously customers are finding it easy and convenient to
shop these days. Looking at the early days when a customer
has to wait for a long time to buy a product, it is easy now as
they can select their product from wide ranges available in the
market. They can select a product which will serve their needs
the best. This is also helping in maintaining the selling prices
which was misused by the other retailers in early days.
This way use of information system is resulting in a drastic
change in the retail sector. A fair and proper mode of shopping
is taking place. This is the NEW ERA OF SHOPING with the help
of INFORMATION SYSTEM which maintains data.
