6th grade Magnet
science
Students enter the room quietly and are prompted to answer a Bell ringer that is written on the
board: What are the 5 signs that a chemical change has occurred?
Students are completing the answer quietly on their ipads, some are chatting with each other
about the question.
The teacher has a timer displayed so the students know how much time they have remaining in
the bell ringer.
When the timer goes off the teacher has the class ambassador hand out Cougar Cash to students
that can identify each of the 5 signs of chemical change.

The teacher then introduces the lesson: pH levels of different liquids.

Several cups filled with various liquids are displayed on a table in the back of the room. Students
are instructed to clear their tables.
Students are given Good Indicator worksheet and read over the directions together. The
worksheet is also displayed under a document camera.
The teacher fields questions about the procedures and acid/neutral/basic
Students review lab procedures (goggles, wafting chemicals, etc)

Students are then given lab materials, cups for each liquid, and begin the experiment. Students
come up, one from each group, and get droppers of each liquid and bring them back to the group
to add the indicator liquid to test for acid/base/neutral and then record their results.

The students are reminded of the noise level as they excitedly test the materials and are also
reminded to keep their goggles on while conducting the experiments.

Students are monitored while conducting and completing the experiment. The teacher is taking
pictures to use for the Magnet celebration and to share on Google classroom.

The students are then given a 5-minute warning and are asked to rank the liquids in order from
most acidic to most basic and take pictures for Google classroom. They will then clean up before
the end of class.
