Topic 8: Thermochemistry Lesson 8.5: Born-Haber Cycle: Teacher'S Notes

The document provides teaching notes on using the Born-Haber cycle to calculate enthalpy changes for the formation of ionic compounds. It outlines a 60-minute lesson that will teach students how to 1) construct a Born-Haber cycle for an ionic compound, 2) perform enthalpy calculations using the cycle, and 3) predict whether ionic compounds can exist based on the calculations. The lesson structure includes introductions, content explanations with examples, student activities analyzing example cycles, and evaluations to solidify the concepts.

Lesson 8.5: Born-Haber cycle

Aim: To explain how to use Born-Haber cycle for enthalpy calculations.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

1. construct a Born-Haber cycle for an ionic compound.

2. perform enthalpy calculations using the Born-Haber cycle.
3. predict the existence of ionic compounds from enthalpy calculations.

Assumed prior knowledge:

The students should already:

1. be able to use Hesss law for enthalpy calculations.

2. know the concept of standard enthalpy of formation.
3. be able to relate lattice energy to ionic charge and radius.

Time to complete the lesson: 60 minutes.

Key Terms: Born-Haber cycle, Hesss law, noble gases, enthalpy of formation.
