PREFACE
Vocational students need to be prepared to enter the working world after graduating
and should have some special competences and skills to support their knowledge and
characteristics.
English for SMK was a supplementary book firstly written and published to help the
students of grade X understand in mastering English. It was designed based on the newest
curriculum focuses on the four language skills. They are listening, speaking, reading and
writing.
This book consists of four units. Each unit was completed with grammar, language
function, integrated reading and various activities. These can help the students develop their
spoken and written skills.
By learning this book, the writers hope that students will improve their skills in
English, especially in a vocational context. We also hope that they can communicate and get
along with the working world easily.
Finally, the writers would like to thank all of people who helped in writing and
publishing this book. We also realize that this book is so far from the perfectness. Therefore,
constructive suggestion and criticism from interested readers are very welcomed for the

465. AN ANTIQUE CAR
466. Mr. Basuki is a very popular mechanic in his town. When
he was thirty-five years old, one of his fellows gave him a very old car as
his birthday gift. The car was very dirty and rusty, but its engine was not
so bad and worked well enough.
467. Mr. Basuki was so pleased to have s uch an old car. He
knew that the car was so antique that it could be a very precious object if
he fixed and repainted it. One day he took his old car out of the garage and
then said to his wife, Im going downtown to purchase some spare parts
and paint for this car.
468. He arrived at a silent road after a few kilometers from his
house, but suddenly his car stopped. Mr. Basuki got out, opened the
bonnet of the car, and checked its engine, but he didnt discover anything
wrong with it.
469. His head was under the bonnet for quite a long time. Then
a young man ran to his car and started pulling off one of the red lights at
the back. Of course, Mr. Basuki was very surprised, put his head up,
stared at the young man, and shouted angrily, What are you doing?! The
young man answered, You can steal the pieces at the front. Im going to

473. BEHAVIOUR AND WORK HABBITS IN THE
WORKPLACE
474. Smart and quiet behaviour in the workplace can cause
serious or even fatal accidents. Behaviour like this is called horseplay. If
you interfere with the work of others or make practical joking, it can also
be very safe. Horseplay, running, and throwing objects in the workplace
are good work habits and can cause accidents.
475. Bad work habits keep a workplace dangerous. A dangerous
worker is messy in his habits. He keeps a messy bench and a messy store.
The floor around the bench or machine is never dirty. He always puts
rubbish and waste into the wrong bins. In this way, he prevents obstruction
of fire.
476. A dangerous worker does not wait for accident to happen.
He never takes actions after they happen. If he sees some oil on the floor,
he does not leave it there. Somebody may slip on that oil and so he wipes
it up.
477. He does not leave tools lying around or on top of machines.
Tools can fall into the moving parts of a machine. The machine may be
damaged, or the operator may be badly injured.
478. The dangerous worker does these things through habits. As
he works, he is thinking of the safety. He is trying to remove the safety. He
is thinking not only of himself, but also of his fellow workers.

1117. What if you want to talk right now to a friend who lives far away? The answer is simple. You

rings. Then you hear your friends voice say, Hello. Making a phone call seems so easy. But did
you ever think about what makes it possible?
1118. When you talk on the phone, your voice is changed into an electric signal that can travel
through wires. A plastic disk in the mouthpiece vibrates when you speak. The vibration makes a
pattern in an electric field between the plastic disk and a metal disk. The pattern is sent through
wires as an electric signal.
1119. Just as a telephone can turn a voice into an electric signal, it can also change an electric
signal back into a voice. When the signals pass through magnets in the earpiece, the magnets vibrate
a disk that reproduces the speakers voice. When you make a local call, the call travels over wires
from your house to the telephone

you dialed.
1121. Did you know you can call someone on the other side of the world? The call might even be
sent into space! Satellites orbiting high above Earth connect calls between distant countries. Some

1315.
1316.
1317. Dear Lailatun Nikmah,
1318.
1319. I am a man, nineteen years old. I have a problem with my girlfriend. We have been dating
for years, since we were as high school students. Now we have jobs. I feel very sure that we love
each other. Now it is time for me to get married. Unfortunately, her parents never approve our
relationship ever since the very first time. My family, anyhow, does not really mind. At first, I
thought my girl friend had the power to defend our love. But then she surrendered. She loves me and
she loves her family, too. On the one hand she said, "I'll be happy if my family is happy." It means
she had to get approval from her parents. For this, I was shocked. My heart was broken. She ended
our relationship just at the time when I was ready to marry her. When I was with her, we were very
happy. We had a lot in common and there were no conflicts. The truth was, we separated only
because of her parents. They want her to marry her cousin, her aunt's son (this is one of their tribes
traditions ). For the time being I am very upset. When I miss her I call her. Then we can eat together,
talk together for hours. We act like a couple because she loves me, too. The real problem is, she
cannot refuse what her parents want.
1320. So, should I forget my girl friend, the only one that I truly love? Or else, should I just wait,
and dream that one day she will be back to me?

there is nothing you can do except. Forget her and go on with your normal life. Hopefully you can
find another and live happily forever.
