Tutorial 8

This document contains four problems related to process control transfer functions and frequency response analysis. Problem 1 asks to sketch the asymptotic Bode diagrams for three transfer functions. Problem 2 refers to a textbook problem. Problem 3 gives a heat transfer process transfer function and asks for the amplitude of the temperature signal after transients die out. Problem 4 provides frequency response data and asks to estimate the transfer function model from the Bode plot.

KKEK 3154 Process Control

Tutorial 8

1. For each of the following transfer functions, sketch the asymptotic Bode diagram for
the amplitude ratio and phase plot.
100
(a) G(s) = (10s+1)(s+1)
s+1
(b) G(s) = (0.1s+1)(10s+1)
s1
(c) G(s) = (0.1s+1)(10s+1)

2. (Textbook, Problem 15.8)

3. A heat transfer process has the following transfer function between a temperature T
and an inlet flow rate q where the time constants have units of minutes:

T 0 (s) 3(1 s)
0
= (1)
Q (s) s(2s + 1)

If the flow rate varies sinusoidally with an amplitude of 2 L/min and a period of
0.5 min, what is the amplitude of the temparetura signal after the transients have
died out?

4. The model relating the overhead composition to the reflux ratio in a distillation
column is unknown. It is known that the relation between overhead composition
and reflux ratio can be approximated as a first order plus time delay model. The
frequency response data for the process is shown in Figure 1. Estimate the transfer
function from the bode plot.
