Assignment 3

A document provides two assignment questions about calculating properties of photodiodes based on given information. The first question asks to calculate the responsivity, received optical power, and number of received photons of a p-n photodiode with 50% quantum efficiency when the photocurrent is 10-6 A at 0.9 μm. The second asks to calculate the responsivity of a p-i-n photodiode that generates 550 electrons/second from 800 photons/second incident at 1.3 μm.

Assignment 3

1. A pnphotodiode has a quantum efficiency of 50% at a wavelength of 0.9m.

Calculate: (a) its responsivity at 0.9m; (b) the received optical power if the mean
photocurrent is 106A; (c) the corresponding number of received photons at this
wavelength.
2. When 800 photons per second are incident on a pin photodiode operating at a
wavelength of 1.3m they generate on average 550 electrons per second which are
collected. Calculate the responsivity of the device.
