L1-Introduction To Prestressed Concrete

Prestressed concrete involves introducing internal stresses into concrete members before external loads are applied to strengthen the concrete in tension. This overcomes the weakness of concrete in tension. Historically, prestressing involved fitting heated metal bands around wooden structures. Now it commonly uses high-strength steel strands or wires to prestress concrete longitudinally or circularly. Prestressed concrete has advantages over reinforced concrete like avoiding cracks, improved durability, using less steel, and allowing smaller cross-sections. It can be more economical for structures with repetitive elements and longer spans.

Circular

Need
Concrete is weak in tension having tensile strength
approximately 5-10% of its compressive strength (fcu).

By introducing precompression stress on the concrete,

its ability to sustain tensile stresses is enhanced.

The magnitude of precompression force will nullify

the tensile stresses induced prior to concrete being
subjected to tension.
Objective
To overcome tensile stresses induced in structural
elements
Principle
Reinforced versus Prestressed
Concrete
In RC design, the tensile strength of concrete is ignored
and the tensile force is totally resisted by the steel
reinforcement. Reinforcement is not stressed and do not
induced any force on the member. Crack and deflection
not fully recoverable.

In PSC design, steel reinforcement apply force to the

concrete. As such the whole concrete section including
the tension zone acts in resisting the induced stress from
applied load. Recoverability of crack and deflection is
high. However, once the tensile strength of concrete is
exceeded, PSC behaves just like RC.
Advantages of Prestressed
Concrete
Avoidance of permanent open cracks

Better and guaranteed durability performance

Less steel used since very high strength steel is

required.

Cross-sectional area of member reduced

Economics of Prestressed
Concrete
Less concrete and steel, but overall cost bears no
relationship with ratio of weight to total amount of
material used.

Higher strengths of concrete and steel required

Additional cost of special forms, prestressing

hardware e.g. anchorages, ducts and jacking
operation.
Economics of Prestressed
Concrete (contd)
Cost savings in production, forms, prestressing
operation if members same shape and multiple
units
Savings on structural maintenance costs
Lesser dead load and superstructure members on
supports or substructure
Longer spans and lesser supports for continuous
structures.
Overall member depth reduced
