Win16 17da3 Questions

The document contains 9 questions about electromagnetic waves propagating in various waveguide structures: 1) The first question provides properties of an electromagnetic wave propagating in free space and asks to determine the type of wave, cutoff frequency, phase velocity, and wave impedance. 2) The second question gives the dimensions of an air-filled rectangular waveguide operating at 3 GHz and asks to find the phase constant, guide wavelength, phase velocity, group velocity, and wave impedance. 3) The third question asks about the dominant modes in rectangular and parallel plate waveguides and why TEM waves cannot propagate in hollow conducting waveguides. 4) The fourth question asks to compare microstrip line, strip line

follows :
E = E0 e-jz ay and H = - [jH0 ax +H0 az] e-jz. The wave propagates in free space and
its properties are f = 3 GHz and = 12 rad/m, Find

(a). determine the type of wave.

(b). Cut off frequency.
(c). wave impedance
(d). Phase velocity

2. An air filled rectangular waveguide made of copper and having transverse

dimensions a = 7.20 cm and b = 3.4 cm operates at S band frequency 3 GHz in the
dominant mode. Find
a). the phase constant
b). the guide wavelength
c). the phase velocity and group velocity
d). the wave impedance

3. What are the dominant modes in Rectangular and parallel plate waveguides ?
Clearly explain why TEM waves cannot propagate in hollow conducting
waveguide.

What is the dominant mode of propagation in strip line.
Draw the structure of strip line and its Electric and Magnetic field configuration.

5. A parallel plate waveguide is known to have a cutoff wavelength for the m=1
TE and TM modes of 0.4cm. The guide is operated at wavelength 1 mm. How
many modes propagate?
6. A lossless parallel-plate waveguide is known to propagate the m=2 TE and TM
modes at frequencies as low as 10 GHz. If the plate separation is 1cm, determine
the dielectric constant of the medium between plates.

7. In a parallel plate waveguide, the phase velocity of TE3 mode is 1.4c, where c is
the velocity of propagation of light. The waveguide has been filled with a material
having dielectric constant 9 and frequency of the wave is 1 GHz. Find the guided
wavelength of TM2 mode inside the waveguide.

8. Name the different coupling techniques between transmission lines.

Explain the different techniques to reduce the electromagnetic interference.

9. Determine the cut off frequencies of the first two propagation modes of a
circular wave guide with a = 0.5 cm and = 2.25 if the guide is 50 cm in length
operating at 13 GHz. Also determine the attenuation.
