Subject/Lesson Topic: Math Subtraction

Objectives: (TLW:) develop fluency for adding and subtracting within 5 while working with a
partner.

Standards/GLEs:
K.OA.A1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings,
sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
K.OA.A2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by
using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
K.OA.A5 Fluently add and subtract within 5.

Teacher Materials/Resources: Counters for students

Student Materials/Resources: Nothing

Pre-Assessment: I used the Kindergarten Year math checklist to plan this lesson. Many
students were not able to fluently subtract within 5.

Lesson Procedure and Activities:

Introduction:
Kindergarteners, today we are going to work with a partner to practice our subtraction
facts. We have been working on answering our subtraction number sentences with Mrs.
Kelly, but now you are going to have a chance to work with a partner. First, I need a
student to come help me with my subtraction facts.
Choose student and demonstrate how to give two subtraction facts for the different sides
of the counters.
Assign partners.
Once I pass you and your partner five counters, you can begin playing. I want one
student to pick how many counters show the yellow side and how many show the red side
while the other student says the number sentences aloud just like Student and I just did.
Activities:
Pass out counters.
Use checklist with students.
Closure:
Have students put their counters back in the bucket. Have students share all of the
different number sentences there can be within 5.

Differentiation: The lower students can figure out the subtraction number sentences but take
more time and often use their fingers. By repeatedly completing the activity, these students
should rely less on their fingers.
Formative Assessment/Evaluation: I will use a checklist while students complete the activity.
