PSG COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, COIMBATORE - 641 004

SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS, AUGUST / SEPTEMBER - 2016

BE CIVIL ENGINEERING Semester : 4

12C404 BASIC STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN

Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 100

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answer ALL questions from GROUP I.
2. Answer any FOUR questions from GROUP II.
3. Answer any ONE question from GROUP III.
4. Ignore the box titled as Answers for Group III in the Main Answer Book.
5. IS 800 2007 Structural Steel is permitted.
GROUP - I Marks : 10 x 3 = 30

1. What is structural steel? List out the important properties of such steel.
2. Distinguish between stiffened and unstiffened compression elements.
3. Find the net sectional area of ISA 90 x 60 x 8 mm unequal angle?
4. Define and differentiate pitch and gauge for a bolted joint.
5. What is web-buckling?
6. Draw a neat sketch of slab base.
7. What is mean by gusseted base?
8. What is slenderness ratio? How does it affect the load carrying capacity of a column?
9. Draw bending stress diagram under a column base which is subjected to a point load P
at an eccentricity e.
10. What are laterally supported and unsupported beams?
GROUP - II Marks : 4 x 12.5 = 50

11. a) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of bolted connections. (5)

b) Two plates of 20 mm thickness have been connected in a lap joint using high
strength friction grip bolts. Design the joint so as to transmit a pull equal to full
strength of the plate. (7.5)
12. The tension member of a truss consists of two angles of ISA 60 x 60 x 8. If the two
angles are welded on either side of the gussets plate at the joint, design the joint. Axial
tension in the member is 250 kN. Permissible shear stress in the welds is 140 N/mm2.
Use 6 mm fillet welds.

13. An ISMB 250 is used as a column. It is laterally supported in the plane of the major axis
at a height of 2.2 m and in the plane of the minor axis at a height of 4.3 m. The ends
may be assumed as hinged. What will be the allowable load on the column?
14. Design a suitable Base for a column section ISHB 500 subjected to an axial load of
5000 kN. Base is resting on M20 concrete pedestal. Safe bearing pressure of concrete
is 4500 kN/m2.
15. a) Discuss about effective span and deflection limitations as per I.S. code. (5)
b) Design a laterally unsupported rolled steel I section for a simply supported beam with
a clear span of 12 m. It carries of uniformly distributed load of 50 kN/m exclusive of
self weight. (7.5)

GROUP - III Marks : 1 x 20 = 20

16. Design a slab base for a column section ISHB 450 carries an axial load of 1700 kN. The
permissible bearing pressure on concrete is 7 N/mm2 and safe bearing capacity of soil is
300 kN/m2.
17. Design a built up column composed of two channel sections, placed back to back,
carrying an axial load of 1600 kN. The length of the column is 10 m and is effectively
held in position one end is retrained against rotation. Design the batten plates also.
