1. State Standard(s):

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.5.3.A: Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound


correspondences, syllabication patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to
read accurately unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context and out of context.

2. Teaching Model(s): Partner work.

3. Objective(s): Students will be able to read multisyllabic vocabulary words, understand the
meaning and use them in the correct context.

4. Materials and Resources: Smart board, blank white paper (one per student).

5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement: TW begin this lesson by introducing the weeks vocabulary
words along with the definition and request students to come up with sentences using each word
correctly. (15 minutes)

b. Development Activities or Learning Experience: Students will individually create


cootie catchers with their eight vocabulary words. The first flap will have each word, the
underneath flap will have the definition, the third flap will have a synonym for the word and the
last flap will have a drawing of this word. (30 minutes).

c. Closure: TW lead WG closure discussion on the various synonyms, sentences and


pictures that students chose for their cootie catchers. (10 minutes).

d. Extension: Students who finish early will be asked to create a second cootie catcher
with the same vocabulary words, only this time they will include an antonym, the root word and
the words origin.
6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiation for Diverse Learners: Students
who are struggling will be pulled for small groups during this activity. TW work with small group
on their cootie catcher and reviewing the vocabulary words and using them correctly.

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:


a. Formative: TW walk around and check students participation on the activity.
