1.1 INTRODUCTION OF CAR JACK
A jack is mechanical device used to lift heavy loads or apply great forces. Jacks
employ a screw thread or hydraulic cylinder to apply very high linear forces. A
mechanical jack is a device which lifts heavy equipment. Car jacks usually use
mechanical advantage to allow a human to lift a vehicle by manual force alone. More
powerful jacks use hydraulic power to provide more lift over greater distance.
The mechanical advantage is the factor by which a mechanism multiplies the force or
torque applied to it. An automotive jack is a device used to raise all or part of a vehicle
into the air in order to facilitate repairs.
Most people are familiar with the basic auto jack that was still included as standard
equipment with most new cars. These days, fewer people than ever have had to use a
car jack. This is due to the continuing improvements in modern tires that have made
getting a flat rare. Even so, people who like to rotate their tires themselves or who
may install snow tires before the winter and remove them in the spring need to use a
jack to perform the job.
This project is about the designing and fabricating the car jack. The types of car jack
that we were used in this project were hydraulic car jack as it is more reliable and easy
to operate. In order to develop new concept of the car jack design, we do some
research on by giving questionnaire to car user.
The most common form is a car jack, floor jack or garage jack which lifts vehicles so
that maintenance can be performed. Car jacks usually use mechanical advantage to
allow a human to lift a vehicle by manual force alone. More powerful jacks use
hydraulic power to provide more lift over greater distances. Mechanical jacks are
usually rated for a maximum lifting capacity (for example, 1.5 tons or 3 tons).
1.2 THEORY
A jack is a mechanical device used as a lifting device to lift heavy loads or to apply
great forces. A mechanical jack employs a screw thread for lifting heavy equipment. A
hydraulic jack uses hydraulic power. The most common form is a car jack, floor jack or
garage jack, which lifts vehicles so that maintenance can be performed. Jacks are usually
rated for a maximum lifting capacity (for example, 1.5 tons or 3 tons). Industrial jacks can be
rated for many tons of load.
The personal name Jack, which came into English usage around the thirteenth century
as a nickname form of John, came in the sixteenth century to be used as a colloquial word for
a man (of low status) (much as in the modern usage jack of all trades, master of none). From
here, the word was applied to things which in some way take the place of a lad or man, or
save human labour. The first attestation in the Oxford English Dictionary of jack in the sense
a machine, usually portable, for lifting heavy weights by force acting from below is from
1679, referring to 'an Engine used for the removing and commodious placing of great Timber.
The jackscrew has two types of uses for vehicle and house jack. Scissor car jacks
usually use mechanical advantage to allow a human to lift a vehicle by manual force alone.
Electrically operated car scissor jacks are powered by 12 volt electricity supplied directly
from the car's cigarette lighter receptacle. The electrical energy is used to power these car
jacks to raise and lower automatically. Electric jacks require less effort from the motorist for
operation. A house jack, also called a screw jack, is a mechanical device primarily used to lift
buildings from their foundations for repairs or relocation. A series of jacks is used and then
wood cribbing temporarily supports the structure. This process is repeated until the desired
height is reached. The house jack can be used for jacking carrying beams that have settled or
for installing new structural beams. On the top of the jack is a cast iron circular pad that the
jacking post rests on. This pad moves independently of the house jack so that it does not turn
as the acme-threaded rod is turned with a metal rod. This piece tilts very slightly, but not
enough to render the post dangerously out of plumb.
2.0 OBJECTIVE
To require the knowledge of design on mechanical parts and translate the part into 3D
design.
To understand the basic knowledge of mechanical working principle
To explore the software of Solid Works and tapping the creativity.
To apply the theoretical concept of computer aided design (CAD).
To have the complex skills of designing complex products and which material which
suits the product.
To be able to design our own mechanical product.
To be able to combine all skillset in Solid Works and create a product
To design the parts of car jack using the software Solid Works.
3.0 PRODUCT DESIGN
The second problems that have faced it is difficult to pull the dimensions out of it. To
overcome of this problems we discuss with friends to help.
5.0 CONCLUSION
The goals of this mini project were to further develop software of Solid Works skills by
design the car jack. It is also to improve our skills using this software and our creativity to
design car jack.
