Edmodo

Edmodo is an online platform that allows teachers to communicate with students and parents, share content and assignments, and provide grades. Teachers create a class page where students join using a join code. The interface is similar to Facebook. Teachers can post notes, assignments, quizzes and polls. Studies show Edmodo promotes student engagement and responsible learning by enabling sharing of resources and support between peers. However, some technical issues have been reported with uploading work on mobile devices.

Edmodo

1) Overview of Edmodo: Edmodo is a network that allows teachers

to communicate and collaborate with students, parents and
colleagues. Edmodo allows teachers to share content with
students, give quizzes and assignments, and give notices about
school/the classroom and student grades. The layout is similar to
Facebook, but in a safe, appropriate environment for school.

2) How to use Edmodo for teachers: First, create an account and

then log-into your account. This will log a teacher into their
account home page. Teachers then have the option to create a
group (which could be a class). The teacher can give the class a
name and then Edmodo will provide the teacher with a code.
Students will need this code to log into their Edmodo account.
Edmodos page layout is very similar to Facebook. A teacher can
post on the class Edmodo page. There are five options for a teacher
to post under the post section. A post could consist of a note for
students, sending students an alert such as a quiz reminder. The
teacher can attach and describe assignments, attach a quiz and
create a poll.

tutorial for teachers describing how to use Edmodo.

4) Benefits of using Edmodo:

-A secure networking environment
-The teacher can delete posts
-There is a free version
-Students cannot anonymously post on the page
-Provides a source of communication among students, a class,
parents or co-workers
-Promotes active-learning
-Provides a place to differentiate instruction for students
-Gives students an audience for their work
5) Weaknesses of using Edmodo:
-It can be challenging to upload student work to Edmodo from the
iPad
-Edmodo app sometimes does not function properly (will not allow
users to log into their account on the iPad or tablets).
-Students can lose focus while using Edmodo and chat with their
friends about topics that are un-related to the content being
learned.

6) How Edmodo can support teaching and learning:

-Students can take part in book clubs. Students can communicate
with other classrooms around the country that are reading the
same book. Students can post their ideas/ thoughts/ questions
about the book on Edmodo and communicate with these other
students around the country.
-Edmodo can be a place where students can post articles and
information they found regarding topics they are learning about in
class. Students can share the information they found at the
beginning of the school day or individual subject area times.
-Edmodo can be used as a platform for sharing resources, articles,
strategies and lesson ideas among grade level planning teams
within a school.
-A teacher could create a data-tracking group and use it as a filter
on a calendar. Students can record and track data collected from
math activities, weather patterns, and measuring growth of plants.

7) Research:

Balasubramanian, K., Jaykumar, V., & Fukey, L. (2014). A study on

Student preference towards the use of Edmodo as a learning
platform to create responsible learning
environment. Procedia - Social and Behavioral
Sciences, 144, 416-422.

This article starts off by describing Edmodo. Then, the authors

describe a study that they conducted to determine student preference of
using Edmodo as a way to provide information and communication
between students and the classroom as well as Edmodos impact on
student engagement and responsible learning. Students who took part in
the study engaged in the Edmodo learning environment. The results of
the study expressed that Edmodo does encourage student engagement
and responsible learning. The study pointed out that students using
Edmodo particularly enjoy Edmodo because they can share resources,
communicate with peers through forums and discussions as well as
provide support in learning when needed.

Hugely Popular) Digital Learning Platform.
In EmergingEdTech. Retrieved April 16, 2017.

In this article, Walsh discusses how he became interested in the

use of Edmodo in the classroom. His article focuses on ten reasons why
Edmodo is a great digital resource to use in the classroom. A few
valuable reasons mentioned in the article are that there are apps for
Edmodo so it can be used on tablets, iPads, smart phones and
computers, it facilitates active learning in the classroom, it is a great
resource to get parents involved in their childs learning and progress in
school as well as it is easy to learn and use.

Cunningham, J. (2013). How to Use Edmodo in the Classroom.

In Education World. Retrieved April 16, 2017.

Cunninghams article describes Edmodo and informs readers of

how to use Edmodo in the classroom. His article addresses how teachers,
administrators, students, and parents can use Edmodo. Cunninghams
article is a good resource because it provides valuable information to
teachers, administrators, students, and parents in terms of using
Edmodo. I learned that teachers can track and progress monitor student
work on Edmodo as well as reward students badges for achievement.
