Transducer, Sensors and Measurement (EE2L002) Assignment 3

This document outlines 7 problems related to transducers, sensors, and measurement for an assignment due on April 3, 2017. The problems cover topics like calculating the output of a full bridge strain gauge arrangement, determining gauge factor from experimental data, proving temperature effects cancel in a quarter bridge, correcting for non-linearity in strain measurements, calculating voltage and sensitivity for a quarter bridge circuit, relating shear strain to output voltage in a half bridge, and calculating resistance change of an obliquely mounted strain gauge.

Transducer , Sensors and Measurement (EE2L002)

Assignment 3

Due date: 03.04.2017

1. For a full bridge arrangement of strain gauges, find the output of the bridge. Also for small resistance changes,
find a linearized result for the bridge output.

2. A single strain gauge having resistance of 120 is mounted on a steel cantilever beam at a distance of 0.15 m
from the free end. An unknown force F applied at the free end produces a deflection of 12.7 mm of the free
end. The change in gauge resistance is found to be 0.152 . The beam is 0.25 m long with a width of 20 mm
and a depth of 3 mm. The Youngs modulus of steel is 200 GN/m2. Calculate the gauge factor.

3. A strain gauge is bonded to a tensile specimen along the axial direction to measure strain in that direction. To
eliminate the effect of temperature change, a dummy gauge is mounted on a separate piece of the same
material as the specimen and placed close to it. Prove that the apparent strains due to temperature changes will
be cancelled out of a quarter bridge is used.

4. A quarter bridge is used to measure stress using a high elongation stain gauge at room temperature. At a
certain tensile load, the indicated strain was 140,000 . Determine the stain after correcting for the bridge
non-linearity and the error introduced if a correction had not been made.

5. To increase the circuit sensitivity the voltage can be varied in a quarter bridge. The active gauge is a 350
gauge dissipating 0.05 W of power with a gauge factor of 2.12. Calculate the required voltage to be applied to
the bridge and the resulting circuit sensitivity.
6. In order to measure shear stain, two strain gauges are used in a half bridge configuration. Prove that the shear
strain is proportional to the output voltage. The strain including shear is given as follows:

7. A 250 strain gauge is mounted on a tensile specimen with a gauge axis of 20 from the axial direction of the
specimen. The gauge factor is 2.05. What will be the resistance change of the gauge if the specimen is
subjected to a load of 1000 lb. Youngs modulus and Poisssons ratio of the specimen are 10,000 ksi and 0.33
respectively.
