Abstract

The document discusses a milling attachment used on lathes. It allows lathes to perform milling operations without needing a separate milling machine. The milling attachment consists of a V-block fixture to hold the workpiece, a clamp to secure the workpiece and V-block, and a high tensile bolt. It is mounted in the lathe tool post and uses an end mill tool held in the lathe chuck. This converts the lathe into a milling machine, allowing the workpiece to be moved against the rotating cutter for milling.

ABSTRACT

Lathe is called as a father of the machine tool. Main function of the lathe is

to remove the metal from the work piece to the required shape and size. It is used

to perform the following processes like facing, turning, tapering, threading, boring,

knurling, grooving etc.,. But it cannot be used for slotting operation and gear

cutting. We need special attachment for do the special operations. Slotting

operation is done by a special attachment called milling attachment. Milling

attachment convert the conventional lathe into a milling machine. It consists of a

v-block, clamp, and high tensile bolt. V-block is a kind of fixture used to hold the

cylindrical work piece, the angle between the faces of vblock is 90 for good

rigidity. Clamp is used to hold the work piece and vblock with help of high tensile

bolt. Milling attachment is fixed in the tool post of the lathe. The end mill tool is

hold in the three jaw chuck by means of arbor like as milling machine. Now the

conventional lathe works like milling machine. The work piece is moved against

the rotating cutter. The movement of work piece is done by carriage and cross

slide rotation. This attachment helps us to do the milling operation without need of

milling machine.
