Vector f5

This document defines key concepts about vectors: 1) It distinguishes between scalar and vector quantities, noting that vectors have both magnitude and direction while scalars only have magnitude. 2) It introduces notation for the magnitude of vectors, including || and | |, and defines a zero vector as having zero magnitude and no direction. 3) Two vectors are equal if they have the same magnitude and direction, while two vectors are parallel if one is a scalar multiple of the other. 4) The addition and subtraction of vectors is demonstrated through examples of finding the resultant vector when two or more vectors are combined.

Notes 4.1 VECTOR 4.1.

2 Magnitude and direction of vectors

4.1 .1 Vector and scalar quantities The symbol || is used to denote the magnitude of a
vector.
A quantity that only has a size, known as magnitude,
is called a scalar quantity, such as area, volume, For example, |PQ| and |u| denote the magnitude of
mass, temperature and pressure. vectors PQ and u respectively.

A quantity that has a magnitude and a direction is A vector with magnitude of zero and no direction is
called a vector quantity, such as force, known as zero vector. It is denoted as 0.
displacement, velocity, acceleration, momentum and
impulse. A negative sign ( - ) is used to denote a vector in the
opposite direction. For example the negative vector for
