Juan Carlos Porras proposes creating the Florida Student Political Activism Scholarship (FPSAS) to reward high school seniors and college students for their political work. The FPSAS would provide $1,000-$3,000 scholarships for extensive involvement in political campaigns and organizations, funded through private donations and a small amount of state funds. Applicants would submit their accomplishments and an essay on their motivation. A review committee would select three winners - $3,000 for first, $2,000 for second, and $1,000 for third place. This scholarship aims to both reward and encourage more student political participation.

Dear Florida Legislators;

Motivation among young voters to engage in politics is reaching an all-time high. Millennials
and the newer generations are more and more involved in how our democracy functions, which
could have favorable results for our future. Many of these young voters, if not all are students
either entering or already attending a college or university. With the rising costs of tuition, these
students often struggle looking for scholarships and means to pay for their education. During
election periods, the many students that do participate in politics become volunteers, dedicating
precious time and energy to get officials elected while they could instead be searching for a job
to pay for their classes. According to The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning
and Engagement, approximately 24 million young voters participated in the 2016 election, which
is about 50% of citizens aged 18-29 in the United States. The recent polarization of the political
parties has resulted in an enormous number of young voters going to vote in the polls, but not
many are willing to dedicate their time to campaigns due to factors they have absolutely no
control over. In addition, there are students such as myself who dedicate much of their free time
to politics for little to no rewards.

Relating to this dilemma, I propose the creation of a scholarship aimed both to reward students
who are increasingly active in their political community and encourage more students to get
involved in politics at all levels. The Florida Student Political Activism Scholarship or
(FPSAS) will supply high school seniors and college students a $1,000 $3,000 scholarship for
their extensive work on political campaigns and political organizations in their communities.
These funds will be collected mostly through private donations and a small portion of state
funds. Applicants can fill out a document detailing their accomplishments with detailed history
of the past year while writing an essay on why they involve themselves in politics. A committee
of legislators and community leaders will review applications by investigating the contacts the
applicants put to confirm the work they declared was in fact truthful. FPSAS will be a yearly
scholarship, meaning applicants may apply for the scholarship every year and only three students
will be chosen. The student winning first place will receive the $3,000 scholarship while the
runner up will get $2000 scholarship and 3rd place receiving $1000 scholarship. With this
additional motivation, students across the state of Florida will be empowered to impact the
politics of their neighborhoods and we will usher in a new era of young leaders for the future of
our democracy. As the fastest growing voting demographic, we ask for your support and we will
consider your decisions in the near future.

Sincerely,
Juan C. Porras
