ME101 Div3 2017 Tutorial-10

This document contains 6 problems related to engineering mechanics. Problem 1 involves determining velocities and positions of billiard balls hitting each other. Problem 2 involves calculating velocities and forces on an air jet impinging on a vane. Problem 3 involves calculating the time required to stop a flywheel using brakes. Problem 4 involves determining forces on a connecting rod and piston in an engine system. Problem 5 involves calculating the velocity of a rod attached to rotating disks. Problem 6 involves calculating tensions on a tape moving over two drums.

ME 101 Engineering Mechanics

Division III | Tutorial 10 | 17 Apr 2017

1. In a game of billiards, ball A is given an initial velocity

v0 along the longitudinal axis of the table. It hits ball
B and then ball C, which are both at rest. Balls A and
C are observed to hit the sides of the table squarely
at A and C, respectively, and ball B is observed to hit
the side obliquely at B. Knowing that v0 = 4 m/s, vA =
1.92 m/s, and a = 1.65 m, determine (a) the velocities
vB and vC of balls B and C, (b) the Point C where ball
C hits the side of the table. Assume frictionless
surfaces and perfectly elastic impacts (that is,
conservation of energy).

2. A high speed jet of air issues from the nozzle A with a

velocity of vA and mass flow rate of 0.36 kg/s. The air
impinges on a vane causing it to rotate to the position
shown. The vane has a mass of 6-kg. Knowing that the
magnitude of the air velocity is equal at A and B,
determine (a) the magnitude of the velocity at A, (b)
the components of the reactions at O.

3. The 100-mm-radius brake drum is attached to a flywheel

which is not shown. The drum and flywheel together have a
mass of 300 kg and a radius of gyration of 600 mm. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the brake band and the
drum is 0.30. Knowing that a force P of magnitude 50 N is
applied at A when the angular velocity is 180 rpm
counterclockwise, determine the time required to stop the
flywheel when a = 200 mm and b = 160 mm.

4. In the engine system shown l = 250 mm and b = 100 mm. The connecting rod BD is assumed to be a
1.2-kg uniform slender rod and is attached to the 1.8-kg piston P. During a test of the system, crank
AB is made to rotate with a constant angular velocity of 600 rpm clockwise with no force applied to
the face of the piston. Determine the forces exerted on the connecting rod at B and D when = 180.
(Neglect the effect of the weight of the rod.)
5. The 5-kg rod BC is attached by pins to two uniform disks as shown. The mass of the 150-mm-radius
disk is 6 kg and that of the 75-mm-radius disk is 1.5 kg. Knowing that the system is released from rest
in the position shown, determine the velocity of the rod after disk A has rotated through 90.

6. A tape moves over the two drums shown. Drum A

weighs 0.6 kg and has a radius of gyration of 20 mm,
while drum B weighs 1.75 kg and has a radius of
gyration of 30 mm. In the lower portion of the tape
the tension is constant and equal to TA = 4 N. Knowing
that the tape is initially at rest, determine (a) the
required constant tension TB if the velocity of the tape
is to be v = 3 m/s after 0.24 s, (b) the corresponding
tension in the portion of tape between the drums.
