Skills Goods Services Knowledge: Neolithic Revolution

Technology refers to the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used to develop goods and services. It can exist as knowledge or be embedded in machines. The use of technology began with simple tools and increased available food sources and ability to travel. Developments like the printing press, telephone, and internet have reduced physical barriers to communication. Advances in military technology have increased weapons' destructive power. Technology affects economies, environments, values, and raises ethical issues. It allows fabrication of devices and is embedded within them to enable capabilities rather than just being the devices themselves. Technology is the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production

of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation.

Technology can be the knowledge of techniques, processes, etc. or it can be embedded in
machines, computers, devices and factories, which can be operated by individuals without
detailed knowledge of the workings of such things.

The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple
tools. The prehistoric discovery of how to control fire and the later Neolithic Revolution
increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans to travel in
and control their environment. Developments in historic times, including the printing press,
the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed
humans to interact freely on a global scale. The steady progress of military technology has
brought weapons of ever-increasing destructive power, from clubs to nuclear weapons.

Technology has many effects. It has helped develop more advanced economies and has allowed
the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known
as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of Earth's environment. Various
implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises
new ethical questions.

We commonly associate technology with things. We call the iPhone a piece of technology. We
call the Space Shuttle a piece of technology. But that is inaccurate. Many technologies are used
to fabricate an iPhone or Space Shuttle. Many technologies are embedded within an iPhone or
Space Shuttle. And an iPhone or Space Shuttle provides us ways to do things - they facilitate
technologies.

To have a technology means to know how to do something and to be able to do it - to know how
to build something and then know how to reliably and safely use it.
