Tutorials and Assignments #6

This document contains 4 questions related to the design and analysis of prestressed concrete beams. Question 1 asks to select a beam cross section to support a given load. Question 2 asks to determine the minimum and maximum prestress forces for a given beam cross section. Question 3 asks to calculate the ultimate moment of resistance for a pretensioned beam section. Question 4 asks to estimate short-term deflections for a simply supported prestressed concrete beam under a given load case.

CSE30310 Tutorial and Assignment #6 Prestressed Concrete

Question 1: Select a rectangular section for a post-tensioned beam to carry, in addition to its self-weight,
a uniformly distributed load of 3kN/m over a simply supported span of 10 m. The member is to be
designed as class 1 with grade 40 concrete, without lateral support. Assume 20% loss of prestress (K =
0.8)

Question 2: A 10m span beam with a cross-section of 200(b)x350(h) supports a uniformly distributed
live load of 3kN/m. The member is to be designed as class 1 member with grade 40 concrete. Assume
20% loss of prestress and the maximum possible eccentricity of 125 mm allowed for the tendon.
Determine the minimum and maximum possible values of prestress force for the beam.

Question 3: Calculate the ultimate moment of resistance for the pretensioned section with 10 bonded
5mm wires of characteristic strength fpu=1610N/mm2. The wires are initially stressed to 1000N/mm2 and
30% losses are anticipated. Concrete grade fcu = 40N/mm2. The stress-strain curve for the wire is shown in
the following figure:

Question 4 Estimate the short-term deflections for a 200 350 mm simply-supported prestressed
concrete beam of 10 mm span. The prestressing tendon has a parabolic profile with mid-span
eccentricity = 75.0 mm and the end eccentricity = 0.0 at both ends. The initial prestress force at
transfer, P0, is 560 kN and there is 20% per cent prestress loss. The imposed load consists of 2.0
kN/m finishes and 1.0 kN/m imposed load. Elastic modulus of concrete Ec = 35 kN/mm2. Assume
30% of the imposed load contributes to the quasi-permanent action.

Hint: the mid-span deflection of a simply supported beam under uniformly distributed load w is:
