How To Understand LTE Harmonic Interference From GSM

LTE sites operating in Band 38 experience harmonic interference from nearby GSM signals, even though there is no frequency overlap between LTE and GSM bands. The second harmonic frequency of GSM900 signals falls within the Band 38 LTE frequency range, causing interference. Specifically, the second harmonic of GSM900 signals ranges from 1780-1818MHz and 1870-1908MHz, which overlaps with the Band 38 LTE range of 1880-1920MHz. This harmonic interference occurs when GSM900 and LTE Band 38 equipment are located close together.

How to Understand LTE Harmonic Interference from GSM

In China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) network, LTE sites

in Band 38 always be interfered by harmonic wave of GSM. This KO tries
to give an explanation of the interference.

spectrum resources of CMCC:

CMCC 2G: CMCC 4G:

GSM TDD-LTE
Carrier: 200K Band Width: 20M
GSM900: 890-909/935- Carrier: 180K
954MHz B38: 2570-2620MHz
GSM1800: 1710-1725/1805- B39: 1880-1920MHz
1820 B40: 2300-2400 MHz

From the spectrum resources above, we can see that there isnt same
frequency between TDD-LTE and GSM. But the LTE sites in Band 38 will
be interfered, and the harmonic interference wave form is as below:

Why harmonic interference

A Fourier Series is an expansion of a periodic function in terms of
an infinite sum of sines and cosines.
According to Fourier Series The frequency of second harmonic is
twice than fundamental wave. So the frequency band of the second
harmonic of GSM900 is 1780-1818/1870-1908MHz, and LTE band 38
frequency band is 1880-1920MHz.
When the radio frequency equipment of GSM900 is close to the
antenna of TDD-LTE band 38 sites. The LTE will be under the
harmonic interference of GSM.
