This document appears to be an experiment report on series and parallel circuits. It includes observations and measurements of voltage, current, and resistance values for three different circuit configurations. It also poses five questions related to applications, fault analysis, and calculations involving series and parallel resistors. The questions are answered with explanations of applications like switches and lighting, types of analysis errors, and sample calculations to find unknown resistances and voltage drops.

Questions and problems

1. State some applications of Series and parallel Circuits

Series - All mains operated appliances have switches that are

connected to the live wire (the wire that carries current into the appliance).
When a switch is in series with a device, it controls the device, allowing us to
switch it on and off.

Parallel - is composed of two or more independent paths that are

linked to the source. The full circuit voltage flows through every load in the
circuit. For example, if a parallel circuit has two 60-watt light bulbs and a full
circuit voltage of 120 volts, each of the bulbs gets 120 volts from the source.
When another 60-watt bulb is connected to the circuit, it also receives the
same number of volts and produces the same brightness level as the other
two bulbs.

2. Discuss the fault analysis in (a.) Series Circuits (b.)Parallel

Circuits (c.) Series parallel
(1.) Misidentifying Series and parallel device connections
Beginning circuit analysis students frequently struggle to
identify the difference between series and parallel connections
of devices.

(2.) Failing to label Voltage polarities and current directions

When you analyze any circuit, the first step is to properly
label the voltage polarities and current direction for each device in the
circuit. Circuit labels serve as reference marks for whats happening in
the circuit.
(3.) Making Incorrect Assumptions about open and short circuits
You cant assume the voltage across an open circuit is zero just
because the current through an open circuit is zero. Likewise, you cant
assume the current through a short circuit is zero just because the
voltage across the short circuit is zero.

3. A series combination of 10 Q and an unknown resistance, R, is in

parallel with 20 e. This parallel combination is in series with 10
Q. Find the value of the unknown resistor R if the total resistance
is equal to the unknown R

Solution:
1
1
Rt =10 + ( r
+120 ) +10

1
1 1
R=10 + ( +
r 20 ) + 10

R=32.36

4. Four equal resistances are connected in parallel across a certain

supply producing p power. How much power will be produced if
the resistances are now connected in series across the same
supply?

In general, if the power consumed would depend on the

circuit structure. But for a simple case, such as two
resistors connected in series versus the same resistors
connected in parallel (with identical voltage sources in
both), the power dissipated in the parallel combination will
be greater.

5. Two 10 - parallel resistors are connected in series with a 5 - resistor.

the combination is then connected across a 24- volt battery. Find the
voltage drop across the 5 -resistor.
