Lesson Title: Whos Running the Show?

Description of Learning Goals, Standards, Objectives
CC/GPSs: SS6CG1 The student will compare and contrast various forms of
government.
a. Describe the ways government systems distribute power: unitary,
confederation, and federal.
b. Explain how governments determine citizen participation: autocratic,
oligarchic, and democratic.
c. Describe the two predominant forms of democratic governments:
parliamentary and presidential.

SS6CG3 The student will explain the structure of the national


government of Canada.
a. Describe the structure of the Canadian government as a
constitutional monarchy, a parliamentary democracy, and a federation,
distinguishing the role of the citizen in terms of voting and personal
freedoms.

National Technology Research & Information Fluency


Standards: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry.
b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use
information from a variety of sources and media.

Long-Term Learning Students will know the various forms of government, and will be able to
Goal or Outcome: identify the main parts that make up the structure of Canadian
government.

ABCD Objectives or As a result of participating in Whos Running the Show?, the students
Outcomes: will be able to identify the two predominant forms of government,
discuss the ways that they distribute power, and how citizen
participation is determined in the world that they live in today.

Using, Whos Running the Show?, the students will be able to


distinguish the role of the Canadian citizen in terms of voting and
personal freedoms and become familiar with all essential factors of the
structure of the Canadian Government, including a constitutional
monarchy, a parliamentary democracy, and a federation.

Finally, in this technology-based assignment, the students will be able to


plan strategies to guide inquiry, locate and utilize information found
online, select the appropriate information, and report results when
conducting research in the future.
Description of Assessment
Assessment Plan: Quiz:
Students will take a short quiz that will require them to identify each
form of government that has been discussed in class.
Work sheet:
Students will compare and contrast the two predominant forms of
Democratic government on a Venn Diagram

Homework:
Students will interpret the structure of the Canadian government using
hypothetical scenarios given to them in class.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials


Activity Design:
Opening Discussion Questions:
Class starter and lesson connection: What do you think would happen if there were no
leaders?

Scavenger Hunt
With a partner, the students will be allowed to
use a computer or tablet to complete a
scavenger hunt available to them online. Each
student will be required to access the provided
document and use the hyperlinks given to them
Teacher and student activities: by the teacher to conduct the necessary research
to answer the questions discussing the various
forms of government as well as the questions
discussing the structure of the Canadian
Government and the role of its citizens on a
piece of paper. The teacher will be monitoring the
classroom for the duration of the assignment,
and therefore will be available to answer any
questions at all times.
** Students with exceptionalities will also be
assisted by the teacher and may be allowed
extra time if necessary.
