What is the TRUTH? How and Why do people manipulated the TRUTH? Who
can you TRUST?

Anchor Text: The Giver by Lois Lowry

Reading: Chapters 1-5
TARGET: I can cite the strongest evidence from literary text to support my analysis
of an authors use of literary devices.

SHORT ANSWER RESPONSE: Use the short answer rubric for complete
details.Answer questions thoughtfully, in complete sentences, and with
evidence from the text. Use a SEPARATE piece of paper please.

1. Explain how Lowry sets the mood in the beginning of the novel. What is the
mood? How do you know? Provide specific details. Consider how the mood shifts
as well. Provide evidence for all claims.

2. Explain how Lowry characterizes Jonas. Describe his character. Consider direct
and indirect characterization STEAL (what the character: says, thinks, the
characters effect on others, actions, looks). Provide evidence for all claims.

3. Words such as released, stirrings, birthmothers, and comfort object are all considered
euphemisms. Euphemisms are words used in place of harsh words. They are meant to
make the harsh truth seem less unpleasant. Explain why Lowry creates euphemisms in the
novel. Pick two words that are euphemisms to explain from the story and the real meanings
of those words and what they might cover up. Consider euphemisms that we use in our
society today. Explain two euphemisms used in our society and what they mean. What do
these words cover up?

4. Find an example of symbolism AND allusion and analyze both. Think about the
names of characters: Jonas and all its forms (Jonah, Yonas), Gabriel. Think about the apple,
nakedness, and shades of eyes and what they all represent.
