Tsampson Week5

This document contains two assignments for week five related to virtual and augmented reality. The first assignment includes ten questions and answers about VR and AR. The second assignment provides feedback from the author's experience viewing VR videos and creating their own VR content using CoSpaces. Overall, the author felt VR and AR have potential to enhance learning by making it more engaging, interactive and able to simulate real-world experiences. However, instructional designers must address challenges of developing content and keeping pace with changing technologies.

WEEK FIVE ASSIGNMENTS 2

Week Five Assignments

This document contains the two assignments for week five. The first assignment section

consists of ten questions and answers related to virtual and augmented reality. The last

assignment includes my feedback in creating my own virtual reality content.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

This section includes ten questions and answers for virtual and augmented reality.

Question 1: What enhancements do virtual reality bring to teaching, learning, and training?

Answer 1: Virtual reality allows students to see 3-D images and videos of what they are

learning as well as having the ability to interact with the learning environment in a more hands-

on way.

Question 2: What is knowledge transfer and share how virtual reality can increase knowledge

transfer?

Answer 2: Knowledge transfer is the sharing of knowledge with others. Virtual reality has the

ability to increase the rate of knowledge transfer significantly.

Question 3: Share other ways virtual reality can enhance teaching, learning, and training.

Answer 3: Virtual reality improves attention level and test scores of students. It helps students

make better decisions, retain knowledge, and learn quicker.

Question 4: Name other ways an instructional designer may use virtual reality.

Answer 4: Engaging students in virtual reality learning helps students become engaged and

physically involved in learning and using their senses. Interacting with imagination helps to

build creativity and encourage learning. All of this promotes retaining the learned knowledge

and makes learning fun. Instructors can use virtual reality to teach students how to cook, draw,

paint, play musical instruments and much more.

Question 5: What are some instructional design issues regarding virtual reality?

Answer 5: Technology needs to be more than just hype. Virtual reality should be interesting

and does not need to be exactly the same as current classroom learning. Content and

accessibility: Students want to have access to unique situations where they cannot obtain the

experience in real life and participate in group activities. Developmental readiness is an area

where students need to be evaluated so they can be prepared for virtual reality learning. Students

can create their own content and teach others how to use the virtual reality application they

created. There were issues of height for some virtual reality applications.

Question 6: How does immersive learning improve comprehension and retention?

Answer 6: Immersive learning places students wholly in a virtual environment where they are

fully involved in the learning. It simulates a more realistic environment for learning such as a

science lab. They get to interact with all of the tools and equipment available within the

environment.

Question 7: Give a situation where you would consider using virtual reality for teaching and/or

training.

Answer 7: I would like to create virtual training for our electric cooperatives new linemen so

they can learn how to work on power lines, installing meters, setting poles, working in bad

weather situations and more, all while in a safe environment.

Question 8: What is the major enhancement of the VIVE versus regular virtual reality?

Answer 8: The VIVE includes more sensors to completely immerse the person in the virtual

reality environment or alternate reality.

Question 9: What are holograms and how may they be used to enhance teaching, learning, and

training?
WEEK FIVE ASSIGNMENTS 4

Answer 9: Holograms are augmented reality images that people can interact with in their real-

world environment. Students can visualize their ideas and work and to see their games within

their world. Teachers can use this to teach students to do various activities such as plumbing,

electrical wiring, mechanical work, design, and much more.

Question 10: Now that you have viewed virtual reality what issues can you name that would be

challenging for an instructional designer?

Answer 10: Instructional designers must learn how to create virtual and augmented reality

applications for training. This technology is quickly changing and instructional designers will

have to stay informed on the latest updates in technology as well as updating their VR

applications so that they remain relevant to the current learning environment.

Virtual Reality Content

This section consists of my feedback from my experience in viewing the virtual reality

videos and creating my own virtual reality content for viewing with Google Cardboard.

VR Video Feedback

I watched all three required videos using the Within VR app. I enjoyed watching them

and being able to turn my head and look in all directions to experience the full effect of each

video. I did notice that the tears in my eyes made it a little difficult to see the videos clearly. The

first one was of a baby in the womb and it was a touching moment for me at this time in my life.

I watched a surgical 360 training video on YouTube where I could look all around the

operating room and watch the surgery. I see how this technology can enhance the learning

experience. Getting use to the Google Cardboard is not very difficult, however, this is my first

time ever using virtual reality apps. This experience reminds me of my familys trip to Orlandos

Universal Studios last month where we rode four different 4-D rides. We enjoyed them much

more than the regular roller coaster rides because all of the senses were put to use. We could feel

heat from fire, blowing of wind, and wetness from water as well as smell, see and hear

throughout the entire experience. I can see how this technology can make the learning

experience more fun and engaging and promote knowledge retention.

CoSpaces Feedback

I created a bridge with water under it with flowers, grass, and rocks all around the pond.

There was a swan swimming in the pond and a snake on the other side. There were a few

flowers mixed in. I put a woman on the bride with a butterfly hovering over the bridge. There

was a seagull swooping low towards the water. There was a nice white cloud low in the sky and

a bunny hopping nearby. I watched several tutorial videos for creating in CoSpaces. Adding 3-D

objects was easy. I am still learning to move around in the platform and what the different

options are within the application. I viewed my creation using my Google Cardboard. I couldnt

see the water scene on one side of the bridge because of the way I designed it. I would probably

like to change the orientation within my scene so I can see my creation for maximum effect. Of

course I didnt know this until I created it and viewed it. Now I know what I need to change to

improve the experience. Overall, the experience was fun and I learned to use this software fairly

quickly.
