9.YOGASANDASTROLOGY

AuniquecharacteristicofIndianastrologyaretheyogas.Yogasareplanetarypositionsthat
leadtoacertainresult.Wehavealreadydiscussedoneyoga,thatofrajayoga.

Thiswasmentionedindiagram8.Thisisasimpleyoga.Itwasamatterofoneplanetandthe
housesoverwhichitwaslord.Thereareliterallythousandsofthesekindsofyogas.InIndia,an
astrologermustknowthemofbyheart.Thenitissaidthatthefirstthinganastrologerneeds,is
agoodmemory.Duringthiscourse,weshalldiscussanumberofyogas.Studyingahoroscope
forthepresenceofyogaspresentsanastrologerwithnewdimensionsinhoroscope
interpretation.Whenyouanalyseahoroscopeforthepresenceofyogas,asdiscussedbelow,
youwillquicklyobtaininsightintotheprinciplecomponentsofahoroscope.

9.1PANCHAMAHAPURUSHAYOGAS

Panchamahapurushayogasareyogasthatareeasytofindinahoroscope.Tobeginouranalysis
forthisgroupofyogas,wenotethepositionoftheascendantandtheMoon.

TheMoonisanexceptionallyimportantplanetinIndianastrology,andforthisreason,wecan
usethesigntheMoonisinasanalternativeascendant.Soifwelookforyogaswecanlookfor
themfromtheascendantbutwecanalsotaketheMoonasastartingpointinoursearchfor
yogas.

Forinstance,ifwesaythatacertainplanetmustbeplacedinakendrahousetobeconsidered
asaplanetmakingayoga,thekendrahouseiscalculatedfromeithertheascendantorfromthe
signtheMoonisin.

Example:WehaveaMoonplacedinthefifthhouse.Kendrahousescalculatedfromthe
ascendantarethefirst,fourth,seventhandtenthhouses.Kendrahousescalculatedfromthe
Mooninthisexample,arethefifth(firsthousecalculatedfromtheMoon),eighth(fourthhouse
calculatedfromtheMoon),eleventh(seventhhousecalculatedfromtheMoon)andthesecond
(tenthhousecalculatedfromtheMoon)houses.

Andnowtotheyogasandtheirconsequences:

Ruchakayoga:Marsinitsownsignorinexaltation,andinakendrahousebrave,
arrogant,thevictor.
Bhadrayoga:Mercuryinitsownsignorinexaltation,andinakendrahouseintellectual,
learned,rich.
Hamsayoga:Jupiterinitsownsignorinexaltation,andinakendrahousereligious,very
fortunate.
Malavayayoga:Venusinitsownsignorinexaltation,andinakendrahousewealthy,
loveslife,sometimesselfindulgent,goodmarriage,strongsenseofjustice.
Shasyayoga:Saturninitsownsignorinexaltation,andinakendrahousepowerful,
strict,positionofauthority.

Inshort,thecharacteristicsofacertainplanetarestronglyemphasisedinapancha
mahapurushayoga.

Exampleofaruchakayoga:AdolfHitlerhadMarsinAriesintheseventhhouse.Marsisinits
ownsign(alsoamoolatrikonasign)andinakendrahouse(theseventhhouse).Howheused
theruchakayogaisevident.Thisyoganeednotbeusedisthismanner.Manysportspeople
havearuchakayogaintheirhoroscope.

Abhadrayogaenablesapersontobecomegoodincommerceandcommunicating.

Ahamsayogacouldbeseeninthehoroscopeofalearnedperson,aclergymanorsomeonewho
hasalotofgoodfortuneinhislife.

Wecouldexpectamalavayayogainthehoroscopeofamillionaireorabeautyqueen.Wecan
seeamalavayayogainJohnF.Kennedy'shoroscope(whichhasbeenenclosedwiththe
course).Inhishoroscope,Venusisinitsownsign,intheninthhouse(thisisakendrahouseas
seenfromtheMoon).Inhishoroscope,thisresultedingreatrichesandbecauseofmeeting
manybeautifulwomen,agreatdealofsexualenjoyment.However,wecanseethisyogaalsoin
thehoroscopeofthepeaceableGandhi.Inthishoroscope,Venusisinthefirsthouseina
moolatrikonasign.Inbothexamples,weseeexpressionsofVenus(peace,sexualenjoyment,
riches)but,dependingontherestofthehoroscope,themalavayayogahasunfoldedindifferent
ways.

Ashasyayogaisfittingforthehoroscopeofapoliticianoradirector.

Letusnotforgetwefindpanchamahapurushayogasinthehoroscopesofapproximatelyofhalf
thepopulation,andcertainlynoteveryoneisfamous.Onlytheappearanceofsuchayogaisby
nomeansenoughtowarrantfame.Otheraspectsinthehoroscopemustalsosupportthis.

9.2PARIVARTANAYOGAS

AparivartanayogaoccurswhenplanetAisinthesignofplanetB,andplanetBisinthesignof
planetA.

Forexample,ifMarsisinTaurusandVenusisinAries,MarsisinthesignofVenusandVenusis
inthesignifMars.InWestern(horary)astrology,thispositioniscalledinreception'.Ifthis
positionoccursinyourownhoroscope,itisindicatedbyasmallwave(,inmutualreception
withanotherplanet).Althoughthecomputerprogrammethatweuseforourprintoutsregards
thisasabeneficialconditioncode,thatisnotalwaysthecase.Wecanascertainthatthe
influencebothplanetshaveoneachotherissimilartothatofaconjunction.Ifthisisbeneficial
ornotdependsofthecharacterofbothplanetsandespeciallythehousestheyrule.Thereare
threekindsofparivartanayogas.

Dainyayoga:Thisyogaoccurswhenoneoftheplanetsparticipatingintheyogaislordofthe
sixth,eighthortwelfthhouse.Thesearedushtanahousesthatgenerallyhaveanunfavourable
influence.

Inmostcases,thelordofthesixth,eighthortwelfthhousewillbestrengthenedbythebenefic
influenceoftheotherplanet.

However,theotherplanetinvolvedinthisyogaisalwaysdamaged.

Example:WhenSagittariusisontheascendant,theMoonislordoftheeighthhouseandthe
Sunislordoftheninthhouse.ShouldtheMoonbeinLeoandtheSuninCancer,thenwehavea
dainyaparivartanayoga.Inthiscase,theSunwillbedamagedbecauseithastobattlewiththe
difficultenergyoftheeighthhouse.TheMoonhowever,willgetaboostfromtheinfluenceofthe
favourableninthhouseenergy.

Apossibleinterpretationforthelordoftheeighthhousewhenitisfavourablyinfluenced:
Perhapsthepersoninvolvedherewillreceiveaninheritance(eighthhouse)fromhisfather
(ninthhouse),orhemaybeateacher(ninthhouse)ofpsychology(eighthhouse).

Apossibleinterpretationforthelordoftheninthhousewhenitisunfavourablyinfluenced:
Probablythisperson'sfather(ninthhouse)hashadaproblematicallifebecausethelordofthe
ninthhousehasbeenaffectedbytheinfluenceofthelordoftheeighthhouse,whichhastodo
withallkindsofproblems.Inaddition,itispossiblethathisgoodfortune(lordoftheninth
house)willbetainted(influenceofthelordoftheeighthhouse).

Kahalayoga:Thisoccurswhenoneoftheplanetsofthisyogaislordofthethirdhouse.The
otherplanetmaynotbelordofthesixth,eighthortwelfthhouse(becausewethenhavea
dainyayoga).Thethirdhouseisthehouseofenergyandstrength.Akahalayogawouldmean
thatthepersoninvolvedwouldinvestalotofenergyandvigourinimprovinghiscircumstances.

Example:IfTaurusisontheascendant,theMoonislordofthethirdhouseandSaturnlordof
theninthandtenthhouses.SupposingtheMoonisinCapricornandSaturninCancer.Thenwe
haveakahalayoga.Thispersonwillputalotofenergy(thirdhouse)intohiscareer(tenth
house)andintobroadeninghishorizons(ninthhouse).

Mahayoga:Whenaparivartanayogaoccursbetweenthelordsofthefirst,second,fourth,fifth,
seventh,ninth,tenthoreleventhhouses,wehaveamahayoga.Thelordsofthethird,sixth,
eighthortwelfthhousesmaynotbeinvolved,becausethenwewouldhaveeitheradainyayoga
orakahalayoga.Thisyogaenrichestheplanetsinvolved.

9.3SCISSORSYOGAS(KARTARIYOGAS)

Thisgroupofyogasiscausedbyplanetsbeingplacedaroundacertainhouseand/orplanet.The
mostgenerallyoccurringscissorsyogaiswhentwobeneficsormalificsencloseaplanetora
house.

Scissorsyogascanalsobecalledkartariyogas.Kartarimeansscissors.

Example:LetusassumethatVenusisinTaurus,Saturn(amalefic)inAriesandMars(a
malefic)inGemini.TwomaleficsencloseVenus.Therefore,Venuswillnotbeabletofunction
optimally.InWesternhoraryastrology,weknowthetermenclosed,whichisusedwhenaplanet
inenclosedbytwomalefics.InIndianastrology,thetermenclosedisusedforcontainmentina
negativesense,andalsoforcontainmentwithpositiveconsequences.

Wecallenclosurebymaleficsofaplanetorahousepapakartariyoga.
Wecallenclosurebybeneficsofaplanetorahouseshubhakartariyoga.

Example:IfVenusisinTaurus,Jupiter(abenefic)inAries,andtheMoon(abenefic)inGemini,
thenVenuswillfunctionexceptionallywell.Thisisshubhakartariyoga.

Ahousecanalsobeenclosed,althoughthereisnoplanetinthathouse.

Example:Marsisinthefourthhouse,thefifthhouseisemptyandSaturnisinthesixthhouse.
Thiscanhaveawkwardconsequencesforthechildren,becausetwomaleficsenclosethefifth
house.Inthiscase,thefifthhouseencountersapapakartariyoga.

However,whenVenusisinthefourthhouseandJupiterinthesixthhouse,everythingpertaining
tothefifthhousewillbebeneficiallyinfluenced.Inthissituation,thefifthhouseisstrengthened
bytheoccurrenceofashubkakartariyoga.

Theplanetscanformthesescissorsyogas,butnotRahuandKetu.

Thistypeofscissorsyogaiscommon.Whenthefirsthouseisenclosed,itisofparticular
importance.Thisisbecausethefirsthouseissoimportant.Onecouldsaythatthefirsthouseis
thehoroscopeinminiature.

InGandhi'shoroscopewecanseethatthefirsthouseisenclosedbytheSun(maleficinthe
twelfthhouse)andSaturn(maleficinthesecondhouse).Thisisapapakartariyoga,which
causedacertainnumberofproblemsinhislife.

SCISSORSYOGASOFTHEMOON

ThereareanumberofscissorsyogasthatapplyspecificallytotheMoonortheSun.

Sunaphayoga:Planetsinthesecondhouse(otherthentheSun)calculatedfromtheMoon
richness,financialbenefits.Theeffectsofthisarestrongerifbeneficsaresituatedinthesecond
housecalculatedfromtheMoon.Shouldtherebeoneormoremaleficsinthissecondhouse
fromtheMoon,theeffectwillbelimited,ortherewillbenoeffectatall.
Anaphayoga:Planetsinthetwelfthhouse(otherthentheSun)calculatedfromtheMoon
religious.Thiseffectincreasesiftherearebeneficsinthetwelfthhousecalculatedfromthe
Moon,butshoulditconcernoneormoremalefics,theeffectislimitedornoneffective.In
Kennedy'shoroscope,Saturnisintheeleventhhouse,whichisthetwelfthhousecalculatedfrom
theMoon.Hewasnotknowntobeaparticularlyreligiousman.
Durudhurayoga:Planets(otherthentheSun)inboththetwelfthandthesecondhouse
calculatedfromtheMoonrichandhighmorals(especiallyifitconcernsbeneficialplanets).
Kemadrumayoga:Therearenoplanetsineitherthetwelfthorthesecondhousecalculated
fromtheMoon.OtherplanetsdonotsupportthefunctionsoftheMoon.Thepersonwillfeel
lonelyandleadaratherdifficultlife.Therearemanywaysinwhichthisdifficultyogacanbe
neutralised.Anexample:shouldtheMoonbeineitherakendraoratrikonahouse,in
conjunctionwithanotherplanetorbeingaspectedbyJupiterthisyogawillbegreatlyneutralised.

GandhihadKemadrumayogainhishoroscope,becausetherearenoplanetsineitherthetwelfth
orthesecondhousecalculatedfromtheMoon.However,theMoonisinthetenthhouse(a
kendrahouse).ThisgreatlyneutralisestheKemadrumayoga.

SCISSORSYOGASOFTHESUN

NowweshalldiscussthescissorsyogasoftheSun.Planetsinthesecondorthetwelfthhouse
calculatedfromtheSun,willstrengthentheSun(naturallyintheirownmanner,accordingto
theircharacter).

Veshiyoga:Whenaplanet(otherthentheMoon)isinthesecondhousecalculatedfromthe
Sun,itformsaveshiyoga.Thisyogagivesrichesandstatus,atleastwhenthisyogaisformed
bybenefics.Ifitisformedbymaleficsitcanleadtoallkindsofproblems.
Voshiyoga:Thisoccurswhenaplanet(otherthentheMoon)isplacedinthetwelfthhouse
calculatedfromtheSun.Thisyogasupportsspiritualdevelopmentandintelligence,atleast
whenitisformedbyabenefic.AmaleficinthetwelfthhousecalculatedfromtheSunwillgive
usproblems.

KennedyhadbothabeneficandamaleficinthetwelfthhousecalculatedfromtheSun.Hewas
intelligent(theinfluenceofMercury),butthefactthathewasmurderedhadsomethingtodo
withthepowerfulmaleficMars(inamoolatrikonahouse)intheeighthhouse,whichisthe
twelfthhousecalculatedfromtheSun.ThisverysameMarsalsogavehimhissexappeal.

Theeighthhouserepresentsdeathaswellassexualcharisma.ApowerfulMarsinthathouse
canleadtoaviolentdeath(Marsaspowerfulmalefic)aswellasalotofsexualcharisma.The
Voshiyogaincreasestheaboveeffects.

Ubhayachariyoga:Thereisaplanet(otherthentheMoon)inboththesecondandthe
twelfthhousecalculatedfromtheSun.Thisbringsgoodfortuneinmanyareas,butagainonlyif
itinvolvesbenefics.Maleficswillcreatetrouble.

WhenapersonhasbothaVeshiandVoshiyoga,heactuallyhasUbhayachariyoga.

Itwouldbelogicaltoexpectayogawhentherearenoplanetsinthesecondorthetwelfthhouse
calculatedfromtheSun.Thisisnotthecase.TheSunisinitself,apowerfulplanet,anditcan
functionverywellalone,withoutthesupportofotherplanets.Abeneficinthevicinityisalways
appreciated,butitisnotnecessary.

Severaloftheaforementionedyogaswillappearineveryone'shoroscope.Becausetheyappear
sooften,theyareyogas,thatcanonlyleadtosizeableresults,whentheyarerelatedtoother
indications.

9.4VARIOUSYOGAS

Ihavealreadyexplainedthatthereareliterallythousandsofyogas.Thefollowinglistisof
particularlyimportantyogas.Onemustrealisethatthisisonlyaverysmallselection.Forthose
whowishtolearnmoreonthissubject,Irefertothelistofbooksforfurtherreading.Thebook

writtenbyHartdeFouwalsogivesalotofattentiontothissubject.

Rajayoga:Thelordsofakendraandatrikonahouseareinconjunction,mutuallyaspected
orinreception.Thisisacombinationofgoodfortune(trikonahouse)andaction(kendrahouse),
sotakeadvantageofit.Iwouldliketopointoutthatarajayogacouldbeformedbyoneplanet,
andalsobytwoplanets.

Example:WithanAriesascendant,theMoonislordofthefourthhouseandtheSunislordofthe
fifthhouse.ShouldtheSunandtheMoonbeinconjunctioninahoroscopewithanAries
ascendant,thetwoplanetsthenformarajayoga.Inthiscase,theMoonislordofakendra
house(thefourth)andtheSunislordofatrikonahouse(thefifth).

Adhiyoga:Theremustbeartleasttwo,butpreferablymore,beneficsinthesixth,seventh
andeighthhousecalculatedfromtheMoonleadership.

Explanation:Beneficsinthesixthand/oreighthhousesupporttheseventhhouse(referto
scissorsyogas).Abeneficintheseventhhousewillofcourseleadtoabetterfunctioningofthat
house.However,theseventhhouseisoppositetheAscendant.Becauseofthis,italsohas
consequencesforthefunctioningoftheascendant.Whenaplanetisplacedintheseventh
house,itwillaspectthefirsthouse.Thisisthereasonthatastrongseventhhousealsogivesus
astrongfirsthouse.

Inasmuchasthefirsthouseisthewholehoroscopeinshort,astrongfirsthouseisofparticular
importance.Itthenfollowsthattheconsequenceofadhiyogaisastrongfirsthouse,whichwill
thereforeleadtopositiveresults.

AnalogicallyanadhiyogacalculatedfromtheMoon,willalsoallowtheMoontofunctionmuch
better.TheMoonisthemostimportantplanetinIndianastrology.ThattheMoonshouldfunction
wellisthereforeofgreatimportance.

Amalayoga:AbeneficplacedinthetenthhousecalculatedfromtheascendantortheMoon
philanthropicandbenevolentattitudetowardsmankind,careerinthesocialsector

Ifamaleficisplacedinthisposition,itmaybefavourablefortheownerofthehoroscope
(explanation:maleficsinupachayahousesaregoodandthetenthhouseisanupachayahouse).
However,itmaymean,thatheattainsahighrankingpositionatthecostofothers.Atthevery
least,hewillnotbeveryparticularinchoosingtheavenuesleadingtosocialsuccess.

Gandhihasinhishoroscope,amalayogacalculatedfromtheascendant(Mooninthetenth
house)andamalayogacalculatedfromtheMoon(JupiterinthetenthhousefromtheMoon).

Ashubhamalayoga:Whenallthebeneficsareplacedinthesixth,eighthandtwelfthhouses
thebeneficsbecomepowerless:misfortune,adifficultlife.
Budhatiyayoga:TheSunandMercuryareinconjunctionandareplacedinthefirst,seventh,
fifthoreleventhhouseanintellectual.J.W.Goethehadthiscombinationinhishoroscope.

Explanation:ThefirsthouseisthemostimportanthouseinIndianastrology,andwhentheSun
andMercuryareplacedintheseventhhouse,theyaspecttheascendant.Theintellectisafacet
ofthefifthhouse.

TheintellectualcombinationoftheSunandMercuryisfavourablefortheintellect.WhentheSun
andMercuryareplacedintheeleventhhouse,theyaspectthefifthhouse.IfMercuryisin
combustion,thebudhatiyayogaremainsintact,butthepersoninvolvedwillfinditdifficultto
convincethepublicofhisgoodideas.Thebudhatiyayogawillmanifests,butitcanonlybe
publiclydisplayedwiththegreatestdifficulty.

ChandraMangalayoga:TheMoonandMarsinconjunctionoroppositionriches(often
causedbywomen),probablymadebyunscrupulousmeans.Itcanalsocauseproblemswiththe
mother.ChandraistheIndiannamefortheMoon,andMangalaisthenameforMars.
Charussagarayoga:Planetsplacedinallthekendrahousesgoodreputationandgood
fortune(betterwhenitisformedbybenefics).Thekendrahousesarethepillarsofthe
horoscope.Planetsplacedthereareextremelyeffective.Whenplanetsareoccupyingallthe
kendrahouses,theirenergywillbepowerfullyfelt,whichinmostcases,willbeagoodthing
(especiallywhenitconcernsnaturalortemporarybenefics).
Srikyoga:Thisoccurswhenonlynaturalbeneficsplacedinthekendrahousescomfort,
goodluck,abundance.

Explanation:Whenthereissrikyoga,thenaturalbeneficswillbeveryinfluentialinlife,whichof
course,isverypositive.

Sarpayoga:Onlymaleficsareplacedinthekendrahousesmisfortune,adifficultlife.
GajaKesariyoga:TheMoonandJupiterareeitherconjunct,squareorinoppositiongood
luck,intelligence,andhighmorals.Inthisyoga,theMoonandJupiterinfluenceeachother.The
connectionbetweentheplanet,whichisthemostimportantforourlifeonearth,theMoon,and
theplanetofgoodluckandfortune,Jupiter,hasfavourableeffects.

BothGandhiandKennedyhaveGajaKesariyogaintheirhoroscope.ThatofGandhiisthe
strongerbecauseinhishoroscope,boththeMoonandJupiterareplacedinkendrahouses,whilst
intheKennedyhoroscopetheMooninplacedinadushtanahouse.

Shakatayoga:WhentheMoonisplacedinthesixth,eighthortwelfthhouse,calculated
fromJupiterfluctuatingfortunes.

ThisismoreorlesstheoppositeoftheGajaKesariyoga.WhentheMoonisplacedinadushtana
housecalculatedfromJupiter,wehaveadifficultrelationshipbetweenthesetwoplanets.

MahaBhagyayoga:Foraman:Theascendant,theSunandTheMoonareplacedinuneven
signsandheisborninthedaytimeveryfortunate.Unevensignsare,bytheway,positive
masculinesigns(theairandfiresigns).Daytimeisalsomasculine.

Forawoman:Theascendant,theSunandtheMoonareplacedinevensigns,andsheisborn
duringthenightveryfortunate.Evensignsarenegativefemininesigns(theearthandwater
signs).Thenightisfeminine.

Saraswatiyoga:WhenJupiter,VenusandMercuryareplacedinkendrahouses,inafriendly
sign,orevenbetter,inthesecondhousewriter,learnedperson,speaker,intellectual.

Whentheyareinafavourableposition,Jupiter,VenusandMercurycanprovidewisdom.

InGandhi'shoroscope,Jupiter,VenusandMercuryareplacedinkendrahouses.Itistruethat
JupiterandMercuryareplacedin,forthem,neutralsigns,butasallthenamedplanetsare
eitherinconjunctionwitheachother,oraspectbenefices,theSaraswatiyogahereisextremely
powerful.

Vasumathiyoga:Beneficsplacedinupachaya(thethird,sixth,tenthoreleventhhouses)
housescalculatedfromtheMoonortheascendantriches.KennedyhadJupiterandVenusin
thetenthhousecalculatedfromtheMoon.Twooutofthreebeneficsinupachayahouses
calculatedfromtheMoonprovidereasonablystrongvasumathiyoga.

9.5THEPOSITIONOFYOGAS

Nohoroscopeiswithoutyogas.Favourableyogasarefrequent.Stillmanypeopleleadlives
whichshineintheirmediocrity.Personswithfavourableyogasarenotalwaysrichandfamous.

Thecauseofthisliesinjusthowacertainyogaisplacedinthehoroscope.Ifwewanttoforman
opinionastojusthowayogaexpressesitself,weshallhavetoexaminethefollowing.

1.Howstrongaretheplanetsconnectedtotheyoga?

Example:LetusassumethattheMoonisplacedinScorpiointhethirdhouseandJupiteris
placedinAquariusinthesixthhouse.WecouldsaythatthereisaGajaKesariyoga.
HowevertheMoonisinherfallandJupiterisinadushtanahouse.Bothplanetsarein
trouble.Theyogacanhardlybefelt.RefertomycommentsabouttheGajaKesariyoga
(yoganumber27)ofGandhiandKennedy.

2.Whataspectsdotheplanetsformingtheyogareceive?

When,inthepreviouslyexampleofaGajaKesariYoga,Saturn(amalefic)aspectsthe
Moon,andMars(alsoamalefic)aspectsJupiter,thenyogawillhardlybevisible.Because
oftheaspectsfromunfavourableplanets,boththeMoonandJupiterareunderpressure.
Thisisthereasontheyogaisthreatenedwithfailure.

3.Howstrongaretherulersofthesignswheretheyogaplanetsareplaced?
