The Amoghapasahrdaya-dharani
The Early Sanskrit Manuscript
of the Reiunji
Critically Edited and Translated
By R. 0. Meisezahl, Bonn
Preface
Amoghapa?a Avalokite?vara (Fukii-kenjaku-kannona in Japanese) is one
of the six forms of the Bodhisattva Avalokite?vara, who out of compassion
wishes to save suffering beings through his various incarnations. The
worship of this Bodhisattva was very strong in ancient Japan. He protects
living beings by means of his rope of compassion and has their wishes
fulfilled. This is why he is called " The Bodhisattva with the 'Unfailing
Rope' (Amoghapa?a) ".
This Bodhisattva owes his existence to the rise of the Diamond
Vehicle (Vajrayana) in India and is mentioned and explained in various
works of Esoteric Buddhism. His image with one face and six arms was
found at Mathura, and another picture of the same form at the " Cave
of Thousand Buddhas " at Tung-huangb. His images have been preserved
in Japan at the Todaiji, Daianji and K6fukujic in Nara, the K6ryujid in
Kyoto, the Kanzeonjie in Fukuoka Prefecture, and at other places.
No visitor to Nara will ever miss the world-famous Great Buddha in
the Main Hall of the T6daiji. This temple goes back to the Kenjaku-inf
(lit. the Amoghapa?a Chapel) built by Bishop R6beng in A. D. 733. The
Kenjaku-in, which is now known under the names of Konsh6jih, Sangatsudci
or Hokked( J, was later developed into the T6daiji by order of Emperor
Shomuk.

Introduction
diseases proves that the usual practice which seems to have its origin in the
hoary past, has not been to assign to drugs only a subordinateplace, perhaps
their effectiveness was only empirically known.
A pratima rite closes the Tantric ritual.
The Amoghapas'ahrdayaMahayanadharanz is a Kriyatantra and, there-
fore, above all a practical gastra primarilyconcerned with action (kriya). Re-
specting its rational, all-embracing subject, Mantras of this Hrdaya are also
prescribed for spiritual advance. The defence for the Mantrayanadoctrines
of ethics and metaphysics is not very lucid and impressive.
The Mantras are strings of meaningful and meaningless charm-words
(mantrapada) with a distinct sound effect; a i and u are the prevailing vowel
sounds. The meaningless forms perhaps contain traces of a language now
defunct, but they are rare and of sporadic character, except the Upahrdaya-
mantra and the closing Mantras. Compare the enigmatic etata in the Akar-
sanamantra.
In the Amoghapas'ahrdaya, the Mantras in general end with an epithet
of the Buddha and the closing sv&h&. Only the Nives'anamantranames the
Buddha Mahasthamaprapta, but a long string of Hindu deities is found in
some Mantras (e. g. Devatalaksanamantra). The names of the Buddha Sakya-
muni or of the former and future Buddhas occur in the opening invocations.
The monosyllabic and dissylabic, in occasional cases also the trisyllabic,
charm-words are very often uttered twice, in order to intensify their Mantric
effect. A decided preference is given to the dissyllabic forms which are more
or less clearly derivative; their formative process is regular and transparent.
Their ritualistic mood is the 2nd. sing. imperative act. It signifies a command
of the speaker, but shades off into a demand, an exhortation, an entreaty, an
expression of earnest desire. Examples are the following: ehi (/ 1, to go);
cala, vicala, ands amcala (v/ cal, to stir, be agitated); jaya (Vji, to con-
quer, subdue); jvala (/ J7val, to burn, flame); tapa (*.-tap, to shine, be
bright); dama (*.-dam, to control, subdue); dhama (V/-dham, to blow);
dhava (7I/dhav, to run, clean); bhasa (V.I/bhas,to shine, fill with splendour);
bhrama (%h-bhram,to wander); muflca (V/-muc, to release, set free); raksa
(V/-raks, to protect), and hara (V-hr, to carry away, destroy). The use
of vocal variants, as dhiri and dhuru from dhara (V/-dhr, to hold, bear,
wear) and analogous formations show a further intensification of the charm-
word. Each of them retains the syllabic identity in accordanceto its original
form. It may be possible that the repetition of a charm-word and of its
variants is the most impressive way in which the magic force of a charm-word
can be intensified. Other examples are: kara (V-kr, to make, perform, rule),
kiri, kuru; kala (V/Ikal, to drive, produce), kili kulu; cara (*.-car, to move,
turn), ciri, curu; bhara (%h-bhr, to bear, maintain), bhiri, bhuru; mara
(V/-mr, to kill), miri, muru; sara (*-sr, to go, run), siri, suru. The con-
nection of a part of the imperatives with the assigned root is open to ques-
tion.
2. Manuscript Material
For various reasons, it was not always easy to procure the necessary
material from the libraries either in original or in photostat copies. The

A. Primary sources.
(aa) The manuscript abbreviatedhere P is a palm-leaf MS. collected
by C. Bendall and now kept in the Cambridge University Library (Or. Ms.
153). The old fragmentary text belongs to the MSS. not catalogued in
Bendall's Catalogue of the Buddhist Sanskrit MSS. in University Library,
Cambridge, published in 1883. The MS. bears no title.
This is the oldest manuscript of the work. It is very neatly written in
clear and regular hooked Nepalese characters. There is no evidence of the
date, as the closing part of the text is lost. I have thoroughly comparedthe
writing on the palm-leaf with the tables of Bendall, and in my opinion it can
belong to a period anterior to the 12th century A. D. The writing agrees with
that of Bendall's No. 1686 dated 1167, and No. 1691, dated 1179.
The measures are about 30. 5 x 5 cm. The manuscript has 7 leaves of 6
lines to a page. They are paginated on the right-hand margin, on the reverse
sides of the folia. The first leaf is only inscribed on the reverse side, the
others on both sides. The leaves are numbered 1, 2, 4-7; leaves 3 and 8 are
missing. The right upper corner of leaf 7 is gone, the lacuna invades the
second line. There are some worm-eaten places besides.
The text is uniformly correct. The language is standard Sanskrit with
clear traces of the Buddhist scholastic idiom of Northwestern India. It
gives nearly always correct readings, and is free from the usual orthographical
anomalies. It is for this reason that the editor has given preference to the
text of this manuscript against the evidence of the remaining five MSS. But
to return to the anomalies, there are first the irregularities of orthography:
dhapena (n for n), lavanodaka (n for n), nars'ana (n for d), nas'a, pras'rava
and s'zim (s' for s), asani and asoka (s for s'), aspada and prahasita (s for s),
avyakhyana (v for bh), prakhyalayitavya (kh for ks), mansa (n for m).
Next morphological irregularities: catuhsu (=catursu), trisk&la (=trikala),
trihsukla (=tris'ukla). Abnormal concord is worthy of mention: bhavane
aneka?, aftjayitva antarhito, va upasako, 'kale aksaya?, tasyagratah apatita?.

graha manuscript preserved by the Societe Asiatique, Paris (Sanscrit 14 No.
46).9 Clear Nepalese writing on paper. 6 lines to a page; ff. 101b3-108b6.
The manuscript is not written with much care; it is full of inaccuracies.
In most of the cases the fault is certainly due to the carelessness of the
scribe. Thus in f. 102al: he inserts a long text previously overlooked.
Occasionally the scribe noticed a mistake and corrected it. Abbr.: S.
(dd) aryyAmoghapasa-nama-hrdayam Mahayanasutram. MS. Hodgson
No. 6 of the sr!Dharanisamgraha kept in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
Seven sheets (ff. la-7b6), 7 lines to a page. The language is hopelessly
barbarous. A reviser has retouched the text here and there, in the vain
endeavour to make the jargon into something like Sanskrit. Some parts prove
that the scribe knows no correct Sanskrit. He makes strange combinations
according to his fancy. A blundered case occurs on f. 2a5; the text ends
abruptly, and the scribe inserts a part of the Sutra previously overlooked.
Abbr.: 0.
Orthographicalirregularitiesare very frequent, as the confusion of sibilants
and semi-vowels and of linguals and palatals, e. g. pratisthasairendra? for
pratisthitasailendra0, silasi for sirasi, sasti for sasti, bhagandula for bhagan-
dara, karppulakasya for karparasya, sarvvaramkCarafor sarvalamkara,
baranatmgare for balanam gale. j is written for y, s for kh and ks for ch
(kasroddaksedanafor kakhordachedana).

is not entirely free from scribal errors. The MS. is dated N. S. 839 (=1719

(ff) Text from a Dharanisamgraha manuscript kept in the Asiatic
Society, Calcutta, under B 5; ff. 11-25 with 6 lines per page. The MS. is
deplorably corrupt, and presents different readings because its uncritical scribe
on numerous occasions deviates from the original text. The scribe's confusion
is endless with mistakes in every line. The title of the work given in the
colophon is &ryyaArnoghapas'alokesvaradharani, but it is an integral Szcitra

There exist two different Tibetan versions, viz. an early translation
(rnini 'gyur) and a later translation (gsar 'gyur) of the Amoghapas'ahrdaya
Mahayana-sutra. During my several stays at Paris, I discovered two
Tun-huang s'og riu20 manuscripts of the first one. The two MSS. which
seem to have survived in an almost miraculous fashion the unending
incursions and pillages of many centuries, found their way into the hands
of the Bibliotheque Nationale, to enrich the magnificent collections of
Oriental MSS. They are catalogued in M. Lalou, Inventaire des Manu-

In closing this introduction I wish to acknowledge my great indebt-
edness to Professor Hajime Nakamura, Tokyo, for sending me a microfilm
of an unknown Japanese edition of the Reiunji manuscript. I am deeply
grateful to him for his Preface.
I wish also to thank Professor Willibald Kirfel, Bad Godesberg,
whose interest, steady perseverance and valuable suggestions aided greatly
in bringing the translation of the Amoghapasahrdaya Mahayana-sutra to
its present form. The editor will also never forget the courteous assistance
of Professor J. F. Rock, Honolulu, in polishing the English version of
the Si-tra during his stay at Bonn in 1960.
