Wake Forest University Department of Mathematics 2012-2013: Gentry Lectures

Jill Pipher, a professor of mathematics at Brown University and president of the Association of Women in Mathematics, will give two lectures at Wake Forest University as part of the 2012-2013 Gentry Lectures. On April 29th, she will discuss how some unexpected mathematical ideas have been enabled by computers and shaped modern technology, medicine, and the arts. Her second lecture on April 30th will cover the basic mathematics behind public key encryption and digital signatures. Receptions will precede both talks.

Mathematics has traditionally been allied with the computer: many people think that mathematics actually is computing. Dr. Pipher
will try to expose the breadth and beauty of mathematical ideas by examining some that have specifically been enabled by the
computer. These new mathematical ideas shape our modern life in areas ranging from technology to medicine to the arts.

The mathematics of public key cryptography and digital signatures

This talk is aimed at an audience interested in general math and covers the basic mathematics involved in public key encryption.

Public key encryption is a field that came to life in a famous paper by W. Diffie and M. Hellman in 1976. Dr. Pipher will start at the
beginning and end with a glimpse into the cutting-edge research.
