Tutorial 2 Che641/Cpe639 Mechanical Design Process Equipment

The document discusses strain components at points on mechanical elements and how to determine principal strains, maximum shear strain, and average normal strain from given strain values. It also covers types of strain, calculating shear strain and normal strain from other values, and using Mohr's circle to determine principal strains and maximum shear strain.

TUTORIAL 2 CHE641/CPE639 MECHANICAL DESIGN PROCESS EQUIPMENT

QUESTION 1

The state of strain at the point on an element has components of x 150(10 ) ,

6

y 350(10 6 ) , xy 700(10 6 ) . Determine:

(a) The in-plane principal strains

(b) The maximum in-plane shear strain
(c) Average normal strain

In each case specify the orientation of the element and sketch the deformed element due to
these strains within the x-y plane.

QUESTION 2

a) All material bodies tend to deform when load is applied to the body. As a result, the
body will undergo displacements or changes in position. List and explain two types of
strain involved in the deformation of a body.

b) The thin rectangular plate shown in Figure 2 is uniformly deformed such that
x 1500 m / m , y 1250 m / m and x ' 990 m / m . Determine:

Figure 2

i. The shearing strain xy in the plate.

ii. The normal strain, BD along the diagonal BD of the plate.

c) The strain components at a point are x 1000m / m , y 800m / m and

xy 800 rad . By using Mohrs circle, determine the principal strains and maximum
in plane shear strain at this point. Show the orientation of the element on a sketch.
