So quick recap —my apologies to those of you who already heard part ofthis, ‘This morning, Professor Zufari came into the CS office, looking pretty shaken. She started speaking with Becca about a student, Marshall Polston, who isin her Middle East Humanities class on Thursdays. She shared that he has been disruptive, argumentative, and overall pretty creepy since the start of the term. She sald that she shared this with Holt ‘administrative offices and that Meribeth and David met with him about two weeks ago, where “the fear of god was placed into him”. However, he had to turn a paper in recently, which she graded to be a 50%. She has not given him the ‘paper yet — tomorrow, but is afraid of his reaction. She wanted CS present, usto have her phone number, and since he doesn’t bring anything to class ~ laptop, backpack, etc, if he came to class with a backpack, she Is running out of the class. | spoke with her, got her calmed down, got her information about RAVE Guardian, told her CS would be in the area during the class, etc. She then shared that since she teaches Middle Eastern classes, she has some contacts with the FBI and shared the students name with them. While he has not been violent, he does have a track record and we do have a very scared faculty member. ‘Anecdotally, Professor Zufari had an issued when she taught a RCL class last semester. The person in her class supposedly belonged to and ant-slamic group and specifically joined her class to cause problems. Also, Polston has an ‘Arabic language class that meets M-H and is taught by Professor £1 Hamouly ~is he displaying the same behavior in that class? I think he will have the ‘opportunity to complete some version of the dass by independent study if he so chooses (details yet to be decided). Needless to say, you will not be called upon to participate in that in any way. The main thing ~- in terms of our concem about the dass moving forward and learning something ~ is that he will no longer be a student in your class. I am very glad to see that result, and hope that you are as well. If he wants to complain further about his paper grade, he will have to take it up with me or with the Dean, Hi, Areej, May this be the end of the distractions and disturbances, and may the class Proceed smoothly, learning about and celebrating the arts of the Middle East. Hope you're enjoying the week off from the Rollins class. Are you guys on break at Valencia as well? Peace, . Re: Marshall Polston--Urgent gx “y oy Le From: Areej Zufari [email protected] To: Meribeth Huebner [email protected], Tom Cook [email protected] Date: Wednesday, March 22, 3:54 PM 'have just been contacted by a central Florida journalist who wants a comment from me. He texted my cell phone with this: Specifically - Id like to know if you reported some very serious remarks made by a student about sharia law and advocating violence towards gays, those who commit adultery, etc. And were you aware that it made several students feel extremely uncomfortable? Do you think it was appropriate not to swiftly denounce such hate speech considering what happened at Pulse and today’s events from radical muslim extremists? (Dr. Cook, this would be the class you observed. The class on Islamic law.) This is evidence of Poiston carrying out his threat. | urgently need to know what steps the college is __ taking to address Polson and the journalist and my safety. On the substance of the matter: Yes, | was present in that class, and | do not recognize the description in the "reporter's" text as depicting any event that | witnessed. The description seems to me a thoroughly twisted version of what seemed to me a Pretty innocuous exchange, possibly intended to be light-hearted. But in any case, certainly not "hate speech.” Glad to hear that Ken is going to address it. Let me now if | can help. Tom 10 Emails 4/4 SECTION IV.
