8th Century Indranarayana Temple

8= `|Ox WO^<~} ^"O
BODHAN. : It is the headquarters of a Taluka of the
same name in the Nizamabad District of Telangana.
The place, writes G. Yazdani, is strewn with sculptures
of Jaina and Brahmanical professions of faith
Contemporary history does not mention Bodhan; but
the array of antiquities and the discovery of both Hindu
and Muslim inscriptions in recent times establish the
fact that the town possessed considerable religious
(Cover page photo) and strategic importance in early days. The town has
a mosque known as Deval Masjid. It carries two inscriptions which state that it was built in
the reign of Muhammad Tughlaq (AD 1325-1351). The Deval Masjid, comments G. Yazdani,
as its name signifies, was originally a Hindu temple, and converted into a mosque by Muhammad
Tughlaq at the time of his conquest of the Deccan. The plan of the building is star-shaped; it
has undergone little alteration at the hands of Moslems excepting the removal of the shrine-
chamber and the setting up of a pulpit. The original arrangement of the pillars remains undisturbed
and the figures of tirthankaras may be noticed on some of them to this day. The date of the
conversion of this temple into a mosque is not mentioned in the inscriptions. The building of
the temple is assigned by experts to 9-10th century AD.
The Deval mosque of Bodhan, containing an inscription of Muhammad b. Tughluq, is really a
temple. The small domes placed artificially on the roof and the pulpit are later additions, and
do not form an integral part of the original structure. (Vak Research and information from the

EDITORIAL...
Consolidation of forces for Protection of Sanatana Dharma
The results of Uttar Pradesh Elections have surprised the most experienced pollsters.
They could not predict the scale of the mandate and the subsequent analysis in the Press
of the result has also missed the impact of this important election issue i.e., Temple. There
is a clear pattern; where this issue has silently, played a major part in the results also of
Karnataka Elections in 2008; Tamil Nadu Elections in 2011and Uttar Pradesh elections now.
This will further continue. The commitment for Temple reform is a sure way to win the grace
of the Almighty and He being the inner controller of every voter can create a silent wave,
recognition of which is beyond the scope of material tools available to the pollsters and analysts.
Temples are places of worship of Almighty residing in them testing and accepting
the love and devotion of the devotees. When there are demonic attempts to destroy the system,
the Almighty himself concentrates the inner forces in the devotees to restore order. We saw
this in the past many number of times in the ancient, medieval and modern history. Independent
India has seen them significantly. The A.P. election of 2004 was won by YSR because he
showed commitment to amend the draconian 30/1987 act. He did that subsequently. When
the commitment waned in his successors to implement the amendments they lost and the
new takers KCR and CBN have won because of reinforced commitments to restore order
in their respective states through manifesto. Similar play has happened at Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mahant Yogi Adityanath is a Temple priest and
politician with an image as a Hindu nationalist. He was a prominent campaigner for the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) in the 2017 assembly elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and was
named Chief Minister after the BJP won the election. He has been the Member of Parliament
from the Gorakhpur Constituency, Uttar Pradesh for five consecutive terms since 1998.
The Nath tradition is spread across India, producing many saints, who lived with the
people. They became their mentors in a non obtrusive way. The most prominent of the Nath
tradition monks is Gorakhnath, who has shrines dedicated to him all over India. Even in the
deep south of Tamil Nadu one can find shrines set to be established by Gorakhnath. In Tamil
tradition, he is considered one of the 18 siddhars. Gorakanath or Gorakhnath is known in
Tamil Nadu as gorakkar. The Nath tradition has a pan-Hindu character in the sense they even
have Jain sub-traditions.
Reminding the situation in 2011, the Temples Protection Movement which for the
first time worked to make reformation of the temple system as an Election issue in Tamil
Nadu was successful in reaching out to many eminent devotees who had expressed their
unstinted support to the cause. The devotees through their contacts in various Political
parties worked very hard to get a firm commitment on this important issue. Several members
of Political parties or their family members visited Chilkur Balaji temple and had expressed
their support for this noble cause. The AP and Tamil Nadu press also gave very good coverage
for this issue.
When Temples and our Sanatana Dharma gets sidelined, there would be a
consolidation of Votes towards the restoration of Dharma. It is interesting to see that today
a Rajput-born yogi of Gorakhnath tradition being given the reins of power after a pan Hindu
consolidation in UP.
Let us hope the whole country will have a similar consolidation of forces to protect
our decaying temple system and the revival of our Dharma. O

There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

Crowds of pilgrims from across the border used public transport to reach the Tripureswari temple, about 70 km
from the border.
Bangladeshis visit Sabroom to attend the festival every year. They usually return by afternoon without causing
problems, Krishnadhan Sarkar, Sabroom police station officer in-charge, told The Hindu over the phone. Mr. Sarkar
said the situation was peaceful and adequate security forces were deployed at different locations. He said the
pilgrims were from various religious and ethnic sects. A resident said the number of pilgrims this year was almost
twice the usual number since Sunday was a holiday.
Free access Sabroom and other border towns in Tripura have played host to pilgrims from across the border during
religious festivals, which have traditionally been celebrated by communities, with security forces acknowledging the
traditions and allowing access. (The Hindu 27.3.2017)

PRESS NOTE
Today, a news item appeared in Andhra Jyothi... It contains certain misleading facts. The A.P. Government
is rethinking on the Service Rules G.O.Ms.No.76 issued on 17th February is the gist in the news item. As it would
revive the abolished Mirasi system at Tirumala... THIS IS NOT TRUE... here are the facts :
Recent Facts :
1. This GO is completely in line with the wishes of the late Honble Chief Minister and founder of the Telugu
Desam Party Shri N.T. Rama Rao and also in line with the wishes of late Honble Chief Minister Dr. Y.S.
Rajasekhara Reddy. The images of both the late Chief Ministers adorn the flags of both the ruling and the
opposition party in the State of Andhra Pradesh.
2. On the direction of the Supreme Court to AP Archaka Samakhya that it needs to seek appropriate remedy
for the non-implementation of the amended Act 33 of 2007, the Samakhya worked in good faith with the
Government headed by Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu and a draft Rules was also given to the Government
which would substantially solve the Archaka issues.
3. The AP Archaka Samakhya was very happy when the AP Government recently issued preliminary notification
of The Andhra Pradesh Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Hereditary Archakas
Qualifications and Emoluments Rules 2017 through G.O.Ms.No 76 dated 17.2.2017.
4. The Archaka community has thanked Honble Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu for implementing
the Rules despite opposition for the same from elements which have always played a role against the welfare
of the Archaka community and even strong chief ministers could not overcome such opposition in the past
and formulate the Rules.
5. It is in this context that the front page article published in Andhra Jyothi today has to be read and the Archaka
community is worried that again the forces who have been working against the interests of the community
have somehow been able to stall the final notification of the Rules.
6. It is unfortunate that a mis-information is the cause for delay that this rules in some way impacts TTD. It
is very clear that it is not applicable to TTD as already a scheme approved by Supreme Court is formulated
for TTD Archakas. The Rules deal with scheme for non TTD Archakas. To stall the Rules now in the name
of impact to TTD would be doing injustice to the cause of lakhs of Archaka families and also would be
against the wishes of the founder of the TDP party Shri N.T. Rama Rao who wanted that justice should be
rendered to other temple Archakas.
Flash Back :
1. On 14th Aug 1995 the late Honble Chief Minister and founder of the Telugu Desam Party Shri N.T. Rama Rao
garu acknowledged that a mistake was committed in enacting the AP Endowments Act 30/87 with regards
to the small temple archakas because he was mislead by Justice Challa Kondiah and he was not appraised
of the impact this legislation will have on small temples in a meeting with Prof M.V. Soundararajan. He told
that it was only his intention to reform the practice in Tirumala but was never his intention to cause pain
to other temple archakas.
He immediately constituted a three member committee and gave instruction that whatever suggestions that
Prof M.V. Soundararajan gives for the welfare of small temple archakas should be considered and the Act
suitably amended. All these are recorded facts historically in the book authored by Prof. M.V. Soundararajan
titled Legislation for Temple Destruction
It is unfortunate that Shri N.T. Rama Rao garu did not live long enough to carry out his wish to rectify the
mistake committed in enacting the 30/87 legislation with respect to archakas belonging to other temples.
2. Even though the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Act it realised the real ground situation in the form of
Court appointed Committee reports. The Supreme Court in its judgement of 1997 also came to the same conclusion
that the Act was unimplementable for small temples and gave certain directions to amend the same suitably.
3. Shri N Chandrababu Naidu when he was the Chief Minister gave directions to look into the grievances of the
small temple archakas for amending the Act suitably.
4. Late Honble Chief Minister Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy successfully got the Act suitably amended after
getting consensus across the political spectrum and also through a Select Committee report thus implementing
what Late Honble Chief Minister Shri N.T. Rama Rao wanted to do and the culminating the process initiated
by Honble Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
5. As per the amended Act a scheme was formulated for TTD Archakas and the same was filed in the
Supreme Court. On the basis of the same the Supreme Court disposed of the Review Petition filed by
the TTD Archaka saying that nothing survives in the petition in view of the amendments brought about by
the amendment Act 33 of 2007 and the scheme having been implemented.
6. It is unfortunate that certain elements which have been working against the interests of the Archaka
community at large have stalled the implementation of the Act for other temples and no scheme was
formulated even after 10 years after its amendment.
We hope and pray that the Government headed by Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu will not succumb to such
pressures from forces who are always against the welfare of the Archaka community and pass the final
notification of the Rules at the very earliest.
Thanking you DR. M.V. SOUNDARA RAJAN. Convenor
