Physics Lab

This document describes an experiment to observe and measure current and voltage in series and parallel circuits using resistors and batteries. Four circuits (two series, two parallel) were constructed and the voltage across and current through each resistor was measured and recorded in tables. The results were then analyzed to understand how current and voltage behave in different circuit configurations and discuss their practical applications.

Title: Electricity

Aim: To observe the behavior of current and voltage in series and parallel circuits.
Apparatus and Materials: 3 500 resistors, 4 mm connecting wires, 4 x 1.5V cells 4mm
connecting leads, ammeter, voltmeter
Diagrams of Apparatus in Series

Diagrams of Apparatus in Parallel

Procedure:
1. Four circuits were connected as shown.
2. Voltage readings across all resistors were measured using the voltmeter.
3. Current readings through all the resistors were measured using the ammeter which
was connected in series with the components being observed.
4. All readings were tabulated.

Discussion:
How does current and voltage behave in series and parallel circuits? (Give relevant equations).
Advantages of series and parallel circuits.

Comment on practical applications of
Precautions: Turn off switch or disconnect leads between observations to ensure that circuit
components dont get too hot
Sources of error: Since components can get very hot, this may increase the resistance of the
circuit
